If only there were a separate board to discuss AHL games.

Oh.

I'm betting all 3 are on the NHL club next season full time.

Are you basing that on the recently completed NHL training camp? Because Poirier in particular doesn't seem close. I'm glad he had a strong AHL pre season game but there is a ways to go on him IMO.

Poirier is a longer bet to make the team, but we have a few veteran contracts set to expire that will give them all a good chance of making the team.

I think you see Elliott re-signed for a few years, but unless Gillies has a horrible year, I doubt you see Johnson brought back.

Bollig is for sure gone this off-season. There's an opening on the roster right there.

I have a feeling Stajan is a buyout candidate this off-season, but at any rate he's not likely to play center much longer, so I imagine it will be Jankowski's spot to lose.

Chiasson is a 26 year old RFA, and unless he gives the team a reason to keep him around, I think you'd see him let go and that spot given to Poirier. And as an aside, unless Ferland has a really solid year, you might say the same thing about his future with the Flames.

Emile wasn't fantastic in camp, no doubt, but he wasn't really terrible either. A good year in the AHL will do a lot for his development and how the club sees him going forward. If he has a bad year, you can say I was wrong, but he did have a great rookie campaign in the AHL that gave reason for hope. He needs to work on a few things, but I could easily see him making the team as a bottom 6 winger next year.

You also have to consider that as we re-sign Bennett, Elliott, or whoever, we will likely need some cheaper entry level players to step up and fill a role on the team. All 3 players will likely be able to do that on a cheap contract, and contribute positively.

It's good to hear that Poirier put on a good showing, but he was pretty horrible during the pre-season games. Wasn't using his speed to his advantage and was turning the puck over more than anyone else on the ice. Hopefully he can regain his offensive production which seemed to dry up last season.

I'm sure we'll be hearing about Mangiapane and Jankowski a lot while they rip up the AHL. I'm not hoping for injuries, but it's only a matter of time before we see Jankowski given a call-up. This is great for both of their developmental paths regardless.

I want the rest of the cuts to be made. This team needs a lot of practice time for the new system. They don't need extra players getting in the way of it.

Yeah, like there's got to be a separate board to discuss the Buffalo Sabres.

I'm really confused as to why people keep calling Ferland out.. he has looked good.

Skating really well and with purpose every shift. Shows a bit of everything, playmaking, shooting, agitating, solid board play, solid defensive coverage.

Sure he hasn't shown exactly what his most dominant quality is as a player and many assumed it would be an enforcer/agitator role.

But Ferland really is a Swiss Army knife. Can do a bit of everything at a decent rate.

His biggest knock and I think that's what has people confused/concerned about him is that he hasn't stepped up in one area, he's just generally gotten better in all areas.

He reminds me of Marchand in that aspect. For years everyone just thought Marchand was a agitator/scumbag but then he started showing his real skills and truly has some great mitts.

Ferland, I feel anyway, is going down the exact same path.

People need to be patient with him

Classic case of people setting the expectation bar for him as the wild playoff hitting machine instead of appreciating what he does well. He doesn't have a bunch of bone crunching hits? Clearly he had a bad night because that's all he's good for apparently.

Yeah I'm not sure what all the negativity surrounding Ferland is about. Especially this pre-season where he's looked downright determined.

I think some posters see a lot of top-6 potential in him(which he does have) and then get disappointed when he doesn't put up the points. But regardless of his offense, he has so many other great assets to his game that make him invaluable to the bottom-6.

I had the chance to have a nice talk with Ferland this summer. We have a similar story as I also got clean and sober at a relatively young age and I have been sober for 18 years now.

I don't think people understand how difficult those first couple of years of sobriety can be and in Micheal's case, throw in a new born baby and it makes things even more difficult.

I came away very impressed with the young man and I told him how proud I was of him, not because he played in the NHL but because I know how hard it is to get sober in your 20's and stay sober. I think that he will turn a corner this year and have a huge break out season.

Ferlands really is an inspiring story and it's hard not to root for the young man. Add to the fact he didn't start playing ice hockey until 13 and that his sister got a job to help pay for it is just awesome.

A true underdog who loves being a Flame and has his best years ahead.

I root for Ferland. I think he skates well, digs well, has good puck control. He seems to lack a bit of finish and his passes were just off in preseason.
