I wont begrudge him getting paid. Take as many dollars out of Katz's pocket as you can.

He is a bit overpaid, but it doesn't really matter. Edmonton is probably done making moves now, and they don't need the extra cap space for this season.
But Edmonton will still be Edmonton.

One year at $3.1 million is a hell of a lot better than Mark Fayne's four years at $3.5 million (two years left on that one).

Oilers sign Russell for more than $3 million?

A little steep but it's a one year deal. This only helps the Oilers.

Have to wonder if it is Kris' camp wanting the 1 yr deal. One of few opportunities to get paid, keep a NHL job, log solid minutes and showcase himself as a UFA again and to get the hell out of Edmonton.

Problem is, if his career goes the way of Fayne, Ference, etc. he'll be in tough to get a decent contract next year.

I like Kris,
In a year from now when Engelland Wideman and Smid are off the books he might be a viable option if the money and term are right.
I really hope we sign Nak now, or in a few more days when Smid is put on ltir.
Just say no to Grossman though, NO NO NO!
Good luck Kris

Could be a smart contract for Russell.
He probably can't get a long term with high pay now, so take the 1 year highest possible.
UFA next year with Vegas expansion. Teams may overpay UFA Ds

Nak's not doing a whole lot as far as I can tell. Pretty sure he might've come over for a PTO but apparently was not invited.

Would like to sign Nakladal still. Not uncommon to have 2 defensemen injured occasionary, not sure that the Flames currently have the depth to manage that.

Does this mean they have yet another Giordano?

I think its a decent deal. I am not sure Russell is worth that cap hit but its a 1 year contract. They might also trade him at the deadline to get a couple of assets for him, so a fair deal for both sides.

Career killer for Russell. Not sure how he plans to shine in that ##### hole for his next contract.

I would have gladly brought him back at this contract if the Flames could have afforded it. Russell is an Alberta guy so not shocking he is heading north.

Meh, I'm happy with our top 4 D so we didn't really have a need for him. Looking at the early pages of the "did he overplay his hand" thread, it seemed like the general feeling was he would either sign a longer term deal with a crappy team for $4M/year or take a short term contract with a cup contender at around $3M/year. I'm surprised he couldn't sign this deal with a contender.

Ok I'll say it. You all are being very hard on a player I would gladly take back as a bottom pairing dman. In fact we might've seen him here if Johnny would've been signed already.
