I've been pretty optimistic but that faded a few days ago. Currently I'm having flashbacks about all the misfortunes that have beset this franchise over the years and this just seems like it's lining up to be the cherry on top.

I'm curious to know how you would have handled this situation differently, and why your way would have been a better approach. The Flames yielded a second round pick from a division rival for a AHL/NHL tweener. That is pretty fantastic value by my reckoning.

It was definitely good value recovery for a player who wouldn't sign, but what were Sven's options if he wasn't traded? The Flames would have matched an offer sheet (probably) and while he is European, I don't think he was a flight risk like some other players (Nuke, Jaskin, etc).

But there was no actual need to trade him. Yzerman didn't trade Drouin and that has worked out fine. Chia didn't trade Yak (then he did, and still got a conditional 2nd).

That being said, if they actually traded him because they gave up on him, then it was a good move (but a bad decision, since he obviously is a player).

This is a very confusing post. You agree that the trade was good value but you don't like it because it worked out okay for Baertschi? That actually sounds pretty jaded.

Baertschi is probably an okay middle sixer, but I am not convinced he is any better a player than Joe Colborne. It was and still is abundantly clear that he had no place on this team moving forward.

The Flames are going to come out of the gate slow this year because the whole team hasn't even been together yet. Look at Yzerman down in Tampa, he got his way by being a dick this year. He could have traded Drouin to be classy, he could have given in to the 10+ million demand from Stamkos to be classy. Brad needs to stop with the classy and get down to actually getting things done.
How's that Kucherov deal coming along?

Kucherov, Ristolainen, Trouba and Lindholm.

We're not the only team in this situation. Also we weren't the first nor will we be the last. Take a step back from the cliff (though it seems like some people have already tied a bungee cord because they enjoy the dive).

It has been reported that he told the club he would return to Europe

bigrangy has no handle on why Sven was traded yet attempts to spin it to fit his failed narrative.

Goes one further and praises Yzerman for last year, not aware he's going through the exact same situation with Kucherov this year we're having with Johnny.

Just stop posting bro.

was Sven not traded because he said he wouldn't re-sign? big deal, he has no leverage. it didn't mean they had to trade him. The Flames could have kept him but instead they decided to be classy and trade him before it got messy. This act of class (and several others over the years) has not seemed to help Calgary in contract negotiations, so you have to wonder why one should be classy when it doesn't help you.

Yzerman stood his ground and has managed to put together a roster that has way more talent than is possible to fit under the salary cap. Bishop (and Vas) are good goalies, their defense is great, and they have 7 forwards who can play in a top 6 role. Things in Tampa tend to happen as Yzerman desires, and I don't get that feeling with Treliving lately.

He had leverage to go to Europe. Class had nothing to do with it. They traded him for value

He did, and it's been explained to you several times and you keep sticking your head in the sand. He had the option of simply not reporting to us (which by all accounts was his intention) and he was also no longer waiver eligible. It was absolutely the right call given the situation, and was all on the player.

You're seriously judging Treliving on the team Tampa has put together over the last decade?

Yea, not talking to you any more. That's just entering ridiculous territory.

I didn't care for Vey at all. Wotherspoon wasn't bad tho. I wish Grossman was released before Wotherspoon was sent down

Which GM in their right mind would waste an offer sheet on Sven? Especially when there was an outside chance he could have been placed on waivers.

I personally don't see a career NHL player in Sven, I see a talented entitled selfish whiner, who was butt hurt because he got passed over by more committed and younger players. Getting a second for him was amazing value, and was only possible because of how desperate for young talent the nucks were.

On a side note, Yak sucks and he'll be in the KHL after his contract is up. He's proof you can't fix stupid, Bust city! Terrible asset management by the Oilers start to finish with that first overall pick, but hey, they managed to salvage a conditional second for a lottery pick...... And somehow that seems like a win in your eyes????

NHL players respect and want to play for classy organizations that treat their players and former players well, I don't understand how you can see this as a bad thing.

They said they would be down to the 7D, 13F on Saturday morning, so some releases must be happening asap?

My guess is the press release will drop at 10am when the players clear waivers.
The Flames practice at 11.

I was really hoping to see Brandon Bollig on the waiver wire today.

That is all.

I didn't see much of the pre-season, but of what I did see, Wotherspoon looked really lost at times. A complete lack of awareness, and not enough footspeed to make up for that lack of awareness. I'm shocked to see him still make simple coverage mistakes at this point in his career. He might improve and eventually make the NHL, but I'm no longer expecting it. I give him one more year to work on his game, but after that I would cut bait.

I've also noticed that he still gets beat on the rush. His pivot is nowhere near NHL quality.

For ppl saying that they're disappointed he got sent down, they have an idea in their head that does not reflect reality. He is not an NHLer.

Around these parts optimism is as good as accurate analysis.
