Not a fan. Would've preferred Nakladal. Russell epitomizes everything wrong with Hartley's system.

Wideman & Engellend are bonefide NHL defenders... they're just not very good ones. Moreover one of the reasons they lack good bonafide NHL defenders is because they've had guys like Russell/Wideman/Engellend blocking the guys on the farm from getting regular NHL reps (and thus becoming bonafide).

If the cap space is to go out and get a bonafided scoring winger or 2nd pairing dman, Iīm all for it. I canīt imagine they need cap space because they want to give Johnny 9-10M per. It would be terrible resource mgmt to use a pick in the first 3 rounds or a good prospect just to open up space for Russell.

If Johnny has no rights to claim 8M per year, what leverage does Russell have to demand anything more than 1M per season on a one year? The seasons starts in 5 days and heīs still unsigned. And why are they so averse to trying Wotherspoon or Kulak? Russell is on the market as insurance anyways, no one wants to sign him. I donīt get it.

Not that I think either player will be on the team, but what's your reasoning behind preferring Nakladal over Russell. I hear this often, and would like some clarification.

Russell is a glue guy in the room. He is beloved by this team. Not sure why that is hard to understand for some.

He is just what Ferrence and Kobasew were.

if Russell's a great glue guy, hire him as social even organizer for the team. all the stuff that BT and Gully talked up this summer about wanting to have the puck more and block less are the opposite of Russell, so trying to get him back on the ice is a crazy contradiction.

The Flames don't have any NHL calibre prospects to take those spots.

Kulak is ready, Nakladal is better than either of them

I don't agree.

As far as nakladal seems to be concerned, neither does flames management.

Glue guy meaning that they need him to hold the team together? Nah.

I'm sure he's a good veteran guy in the room. But so are (according to everything I've read) Gio, Stajan, Wideman, Elliot and Brower. And Monahan, Gaudreau and Bouma are tight. The team can survive without him and the D is frankly better off without him, because while he can block, and skate the puck well, IMO he doesn't do much else particularly well. Hamilton has better offence, Jokipakka is better at being a steady guy, Kulak seems to have some wheels and positioning and even Engelland is better at moving guys in front of the net. Wideman plays with more smarts and is a better passer (and still has a bomb but can't get it through as much).

I like how you use this word as if to suggest any sane man would ever say no to Darryl Sutter, face-to-face.

Because Flames management has never been wrong before...

Nak is steady, good positionally, is a decent size and has a beast of a shot. Russell is sloppy, allows too many shots and is too small to stop cycles.

I dont necessarily disagree, but how much is that worth? Put a dollar figure on it.

Like making the playoffs and and beating Vancouver in the first round? Both were instrumental in that.

People have really short memories. Russell is not going to make or break this team but we are not at the level of Chicago yet. Outside our promising core the lower ranks of the team are still pretty meh. I see no harm having a guy like this who is a known quantity fill out the gaps in the team.

I think they'd be better served if they brought Warrener back in that capacity

I know Kulak has played well but is he ready for a full-time job? If Russell can be signed cheaply, what's the harm? He will almost certainly be more valuable to this team than Kulak. As per Kulak's development, I don't think Kulak is too good for the AHL. Another year in the AHL wouldn't be a waste.

Next year is a lot more wide open for young defensemen to make the Flames. Engelland, Smid, and Wideman come off the books. Giordano, Brodie, Hamilton, and Jokipakka are the only "guaranteed" spots, and Jokipakka could be taken for the expansion draft if he has a good year.

That leaves Kulak, Anderssen, Kylington, and Morrison competing for those spots with potential UFA's.

Engelland is pretty solid actually, he's been quite good for us. Russell is not as bad as some think.

Wideman however is a train wreck

So the other 29 gms are wrong? How is it no other teams have realized this.

29 other teams appear to feel the same way.

All 30 are wrong?
