Just working out the Skittle clause. Gaudreau wants 3 packages of Skittles per diem, Treliving only offering 1.

Yeah I was thinking this, they might just save both the announcement and press conference for the same day.

Johnny put those points up on a TERRIBLE flames team with 1 scoring line and no support. The top pairing of the other team would literally shadow him all season and he put those points up.
Also 7.25 is less insulting than 6.8. But where the cap is going and the fact that you consider how a player projects when you give a contract to a young player - you need to future proof Johnnys contract IF you want him for 8 years. If I were him I'd sign a 7.25...sure. But DEFINITELY not for 8 years. If Johnny scores 80 points this season and has a long successful .95ppg career where he plays on the top line for the USA and is a perennial all star - he's going to be looking around in 4 years going wait a minute...I'm making 7.25 and all these players I'm more valuable than are making more than me.
I think the contract simply needs to be future proof. Not only for the cap going up - but the value of a point per game playmaking winger who can score going up in the league. Also Johnny is getting better and will improve as the team around him improves.
7.25 is only fair on a shorter deal imo. Theres a huge chance Gaudreau outperforms that contract over 8 years, not to mention the cap going up and the value of point per game, dynamic, all star, world beating players also going up.
I'd never ever sign for 7.25 over 8 years if I was Johnny unless I had no faith in my own abilities or wanted the guaranteed money / security. I dont think people would have a hard time seeing this if they were the player and not a die hard flames fan. Thats 2 million more than wideman ffs. I'd rather pay the extra 1 million, lock your franchise player up as long as you can and maintain a good relationship with him.

You think Gaudreau is worth $66M over 8 years? Considering Gross' initial ask was in the $8-8.25M range, I would guess he doesn't even believe Gaudreau's value is that high.
There's a chance the cap goes up, but there's certainly no guarantee and I'd hate to see Treliving sign a deal with the expectation that the cap will go up enough to give him some relief.
Furthermore, using Wideman's $5.25M is a bad comparison. For starters, everyone knows he's stupidly overpaid. Secondly, he plays defence, so it's a bit of apples and oranges.
Asking the question "Is Gaudreau $1.5M better than Monahan" still has merit, unless you don't think Monahan got a fair deal.
Gaudreau will most likely improve from this past season. But how much? What is a reasonable high end expectation of him?

Got some very misinformed e-mails recently from corp down in the states. They thought our Thanksgiving was our Halloween.

My original point was simply that 6.8m x 8 is definitely insulting and doesnt reflect Johnnys production or projection. Not to mention marketing value and what he means to the city.
I wasnt comparing them as players - just that if someone who is average can be in the same neighborhood as our darling franchise player there is a problem. The kid can literally finish in the top 10 in league scoring for the next 8 years and nobody would really fall off their chair.
Not to mention if the kid pots something like 100 points (wouldnt surprise anyone) one of these seasons we will either have to re-negotiate or have a sour superstar player on our hands.
If Gaudreau Wideman comparisons are apples to oranges then Gaudreau Monahan comparisons are oranges to mandarins. A smart responsible center is not the same as a point per game all star offensive dynamo of a winger who has proven himself to be the best player on his team at every level and on every team including TNA. Sean also had arbitration / offer sheet rights.
I'd say hes way more than 1.5 million 'better' in terms of hockey skill and production (subjective) but the question should be is he 1.5 million more valuable. Absolutely...The gap would be even bigger had Sean not been a well sized faceoff winning responsible young center who can score 30 (rare). Not to mention one with arbitration rights. In terms of production, projection and on ice skills its not even something I'm willing to debate.
Even a year ago posters were talking about how Monahan will likely get something like 6 million and Johnny will earn something above 7.

What I am hoping is the deal leaks tonight like Monahan (deal will be announced, long term etc) and the details leak in the morning with a press conference that afternoon?
