You say one year removed from being a really good offensive defenseman, but he declined incredibly last season, and reports have his skating taking another step down so far this season.

Garrioch was also suggesting in an article yesterday that Calgary was still looking at Russell.

It would be hilarious if the reason he's unsigned right now is "Ok I'll go as low as 4 mil per season"

Wouldn't it have to be?
Is Russell so bad that no one wanted to give him a PTO or sign him to a 1/$1M deal?
Edit: Maybe not $4M, but you'd have to think he's either trying to hold out for a bigger payday than he's going to get or he's already come to an agreement in principle with some team but they haven't been able to culminate it yet.

Was there not someone who said he had 8 teams lined up for him?
Its October. Now or never.

And the Kiprusoff signing back in the day. I had never followed this guy so whenever sureloss would post about Bruce Garrioch "rumors" (implying sarcasm) I'd never understand as the Kipper signing was all I knew of him. I guess he's one of those guys with legit sources who maybe spews everything out too early and ends up looking unconnected.

I imagine Russell's opportunity to sign with the Flames hinges on the annual cap hit of Gaudreau's contract.

I think they are signing him. That just impacts how much he will get.

The deal is probably done with the Flames.
Just waiting for the Smid to LTIR move to happen to officially file the paperwork.

I just don't see how Russell fits here with Wideman and Engelland under contract.

Isn't it a foregone conclusion at this point that the Flames will sign Russell after they put Smid on LTIR?

It appears the Flames are going to spend nearly every single cap dollar they are allotted this season in hopes of making the playoffs. I'm not a fan of the team to continue with a veteran heavy defense leaving no room for AHL graduates but it seems that's the way the organization wants to roll for now.

Will be exciting to see Russell play under a new coach and system. Assuming the Flames sign him cheap what a steal by Trelivig. Get significant assets for him at the deadline and sign him for a fraction of the term and cap hit he was seeking

If that was the case, why wouldn't they have signed Russell to a PTO so that he could get into some game action and work on the new systems? Why waste time having Grossmann in camp on a PTO if they're just going to turn around and sign Russell?

I hear you but I think the real issue is that none of the AHLers are knocking on the door, much less knocking it down.
