It depends mainly on the Gaudreau contract, the Flames want to be as close to the cap as possible before they put Smid on LTIR.

I'm not sure it works that way - that it's a crystallized amount on the day. I thought it was relief up to the maximum LTIR amount if and when needed.
But I know far less than a bunch of guys here on this stuff.

Yeah, you don't get cap space when a player is on LTIR. It just means a team can exceed the cap by that mount if needed. But if you are below the cap, then the player on LTIR will still count against the cap.

If they're not close to the cap is there any reason to put Smid on LTIR soon? Wouldn't it make sense to just put him on IR to free up the roster spot and then move him to LTIR once Gaudreau signs and if we need the space for an additional signing?

Sure but so what? If you are below the cap you don't care (especially if he's insured so you aren't even spending the dollars).

I hope the Flames take a look at Nail Yakupov.

What is going on with Yak? Why do people keep mentioning him? I know he has had a rough few seasons but I'm genuinely curious now if he is available or being shopped? Did he say something in the media?
I'd take Yak in a heartbeat.

He's rumored to be going on waivers.

Dreger was in TSN 1260 on Tuesday morning and mentioned Edmonton was trying to shop Yak.

Now, the Oilers would tell you that it’s not like they’re asking for an exorbitant or unrealistic return. It’s a draft pick. And it’s not a first, second – and at one point they were asking for a third, but it’s probably not even that anymore.
|
You can listen to the interview here (they start talking about Yak around the 5min mark).
Yakupov must be atrocious if no one is willing to give up even a 3rd round pick for him?
Also, if that's the case, Wideman for Yakupov would be an overpayment I guess.

I would probably still do this trade if I was the GM. The potential and age are just better for the Flames.

Dumb question, but how do waiver claims work at the start of the season? How does the order go?

So they are last years standings until end of November I think? We would have 4th crack at him as the Oilers are ahead of us.

Yakupov is atrocious because he is making 2.5 million this year yet cannot even stay in a bottom feeder Edmonton Oilers lineup. The Oilers would have to retain salary for a trade to happen, as every GM in the league know that the Oilers will eventually have to put him on waivers.
To put it in comparison, Mason Raymond was making 3.1 million.

I think if you can make a Wideman for Yakupov trade you have to consider it. Save $2.5m on the cap, likely go after Russell (if that is indeed in the cards), and if you want you could bury Yakupov in the minors for an approx. $900k savings
Not sure if I'd pick him up on waivers though.

Me too, in a heart beat. I think they will work out some kind of trade before it gets to that. If I'm BT, I'm offering a 3rd or 4th round pick. The 2.5m is a bit of a problem though.

Yeah that would make the most sense. Then Edmonton can control where he goes and get an asset for him as well. I'd give up a 3rd for him. We've got to keep all our 4ths

IF I were the Oilers I would take a lesser return to get him out of the division. At least make sure he doesnt go to a rival. It could really come back to bite them in the butt. For that reason the asking price is likely higher for Van/Cgy
