I've been Jonesing for Simmonds for what feels like years now...still think he'd be a great fit for this team.
I know there is no plausible trade scenario, but I can dream

Tobias Reider would be the perfect fit for that top line. The flames certainly have the assets to acquire.
Is Reider even really on BT's radar though or is this a CP'er wish with no real substance behind it?

They just signed Reider to a reasonable contract as well. Doubt they move him tbh.
We dont even need a top 6 right winger now IMO. We've got around 10m in 30 year old top 6 wingers for the next few years. 2 guys who will be playing top 6 minutes and hopefully producing for us. Brouwer and Frolik are fine. I think we could really use a young middle 6 RW on an ELC or reasonable cap hit to play on our 3rd line with Bennett. Someone with some offensive upside or untapped potential. The only other RW we have to play with him is Chiasson. Or playing Shinkaruk, Ferland or Vey there which isnt their natural positions. all 4 are pretty underwhelming / not natural RWers.
How hard can it be to round out our top 9 with another RW? Come on Poirier! Find your scoring touch.

Crumpy, whether you like it or not, I think Bennett & Brouwer are glued together for most of this year. The only way that stops is if they stop having chemistry and Johnny & Mony lost their scoring tough. Then we might see a shake up. Otherwise we're still seeing our top three pairings.

I like it. The line has looked really really good so far. I just dont think it will last the whole season. Inevitably the top line will go cold, we'll try Troy there and IMO he will stick. It makes way too much sense. Monahan and Gaudreau are crying out for exactly the type of player Brouwer is. I think its more valuable to have him on our top line than to have him 'riding shotgun' with our budding superstar center who will be on the 3rd line (minutes wise after Monny and Backs).
I'm happy either way - as a huge fan of Bennett (fav player) I actually prefer if Brouwer plays with him. Then we can have the smash bros line (trademark). But something tells me that shakeup comes quickly because we literally dont have another capable top line RW who deserves/can handle that role and the minutes/expectations. Maybe if 13 and 23 were in the pre-season we'd already see them getting a bit of time with Brouwer.

I guess I've kind of been assuming we have a first line, then we have 2a and 2b lines. Backs/Frolik take defensive draws, Benny/Brouwer take offensive draws.
18-20 minutes a night for the top line, 15 each for lines 2a & 2b, leaving 10-12 minutes for the bottom guys. Special teams notwithstanding of course.

I agree with some of that. I just see the gap in minutes being larger. 20ish mins for the top line every night. 15-20 for the shutdown line depending on the night and 10-15 for the 2b line as you called it depending on the night. Leaving 5-10 mins for the 4th line who are rubbish, especially if we go with Stajan Bollig Bouma...yuck.
I just predict that Brouwer would be underutilized if we had him with Bennett. You've got 2 young superstars who dont go to the tough areas on your first line playing 20 mins a night, in desperate need of a grafting, scoring, puck battling, net front RW. So you sign one and stick him on your 2b/3rd line? Doesnt make sense to me tbh.
Monahan/Backlund will get the top 6 minutes and the most important situations. I think it would help our team to have Brouwer fighting on the front lines with our top line. Bennett doesnt need a babysitter as much as Monahan needs a physical 2 way scoring RWer. Tkachuk - Bennett - Ferland is my prediction for line 2b/3 because it makes too much sense. You gain more than you lose moving Brouwer up. We need to shelter Bennett by giving him easy minutes and offensive zone starts. Having Brouwer alongside him for those easy minutes and easy starts would be a waste of Brouwer imo.

I guess we'll just have to agree to disagree for now and pick this up after a few games into the season.

I think the best fit for that spot is a guy who can carry the mail a bit and create around the net, just because I think Johnny is most dangerous without the puck. Last season, he was pretty much the defacto puck carrier when playing with Monahan, which makes him a lot easier to shut down. Shinkaruk and Ferland are both pretty decent puck carriers.
I honestly wouldn't be averse to splitting up Johnny and Sean
Gaudreau - Bennett - Brouwer
Tkachuk - Monahan - Shinkaruk
Ferland - Backlund - Frolik

Brouwer belongs on the top line. They produce by far the most offense and Brouwer will be such an asset.

I'm not blown away by Shinkaruk and i don't like Ferland, Bouma, Frolik on the wing. i'll go back to a name that was suggested in a blog earlier in the summer (Haynes?).
Alex Tanguay.
It's a one season stop gap but it would add a skill player to the line, likely at the league minimum. Tanguay finished the year with 13 points in 18 games for the Coyotes after a struggle with the Avs.
If Tanguay struggles, then bring one of the kids up to take his spot. Alternatively, it might buy time for a guy like Prybl as well.
It's nuts. It's crazy, but if we want to add a high skill guy to that wing, he's a name that is available.

It's genuinely confusing that Tanguay hasn't even received a PTO offer. Unless he too is holding out for an actual NHL contract.
I suggested Tanguay a few pages back, and I think ownership has seen enough of him, or he'd be here. Murray Edwards has agreed to sign Alex Tanguay to 30+ million worth of contracts for his career, and has nothing to show for it. He may not be willing to add to that total.

The more I think of it the more I want the Flames to sign Versteeg to a cheap 1 year contract. I liked the way he played in preseason, and he is still on a PTO so any team can offer him a contract. I think between Versteeg/Brouwer/Frolik our right wing would be set.

Do Smid's LTIR savings kick in on game one?

I wonder once Johnny's inked if we could possibly see a trade to land someone to play RW in the top six?

If Johnny gets 7, there's 300K in cap space. Smid makes it 3.8M, no? Do teams have the option of declining LTIR savings?
EDIT: It's going to feel so good to not have 11.65M in potential commitments to Smid, Engelland and Wideman.
