I covered this a bit earlier, but I would approach this as a strategic relationship (top right quadrant in the kraljic matrix) because he is critical to the team's success and has the right to withhold his services.
I'd suggest the Flames are much more of a Strategic Product to Johnny, than Johnny is to the Flames.
Profit Impact: Much higher. The Flames have a much larger impact on Johnny's profitability than the other way around.
Supply Risk/Criticality: Much higher. Impossible for Johnny to source another NHL team to pay him for the next 5 years.
There are caps in place. So even though we're all pissing our pants over Johnny Hockey making $8mm/yr, the only reason it's not $10mm or $20mm or whatever is because there's a cap.
And why is there a cap? Because the NHLPA agreed to it. And they keep agreeing to it.
Having money is awesome.
The owners brought in the caps as the result of a lockout, which is the only time they have the upper hand, like I just said.

Your disagreement just confirmed my point.
Don't the owners still have the upper hand because they all got together and agreed not to pay their employees any more than $70M per year (give or take)?
That's cause Gaudreauvertime is busy dealing with Brad finally.
Brad should cut Grossman from his PTO to send a message.

That doesn't make much sense though, Johnny is the one providing the service and the Flames are the buyers.

They have the upper hand when they are negotiating collective bargaining, because they can afford to not have hockey and the players can't.
As soon as they are locked into a CBA, then the upper hand swings hugely in favor of the talent.
At the end of the day a star player can get the money he wants or he can demand a trade. I haven't seen a GM let a star player sit on the sidelines for an entire season in the last decade, and I doubt it would happen in Calgary.
Just look at O'Reilly. He eventually got what he wanted, even if the fans think he's overpaid. Someone will step up and pay it.
Well, Francis is going to get a GFYS when asking for quotes from the top line now. Good, maybe the hack will think before he shoots his mouth off for a story.
Doesn't work that way. If it's true that Johnny's ask was $8 mil, and the info was leaked to media, then Johnny's beef is with the Flame organization, not the reporter who got the leak. Pro athletes may not like reporters that much, but they at least recognize they are just doing a job and the ones who do it well and are accurate earn their respect.
Now, if the $8 million ask is all BS, then sure, Johnny's got a problem with Francis himself.

Every UFA season. Ditto.
In most situation I would agree with you. Star players have multiple teams bidding for their services. In a similar fashion, bottom tier players don't have the advantage because their competing with other bottom tier players for contracts.
In both situations, it's the person (or organization) that can pit multiple options against each other that has the upper hand. This is why Lucic was able to get the Oilers to overpay for him. Which ever team was willing to give him the biggest contract won.
It's also why, if the Flames give Russell a contract it will be cheap, because they could sign him or Nakladal or Grossman or whoever else they want. Which ever player agrees to play for the cheapest contract wins.
However, in the case of Johnny Gaudreau and the Flames, it's altogether different. There is only one team bidding on one player. The Flames don't have multiple options to fill that role, but likewise, Gaudreau doesn't have multiple teams that he can go to.
And honestly, the Flames can afford to wait him out. He's going to need to get a pay cheque before they need him to come in and save the season.

That doesn't make much sense though, Johnny is the one providing the service and the Flames are the buyers.
At the same time, the Flames provide a service to Johnny by providing a franchise, team, building, organization, etc. which allow him to get paid to play hockey.
Given his RFA status, the Flames are an extremely strategic product for Johnny.
If him signing vs not means no playoffs for flames . That is multiple millions in lost revenue for the flames
Let not pretend we are a deep team who can loose their best offensive player
I had a post about that earlier. The TL;DR is that depending on the gap between the two sides and how deep into the playoffs you think the team could go this year, the amount the team would make in playoff revenue is negligible.
This negotiation is about what's best for both sides long term more so than it is about this season.

He's an idiot, who has guaranteed he never gets an interview with the first line, or hell most of the Flames. The fact that Jane, Guy, and Johnny are beyond pissed about his articles is going to hurt Francis and his ability to get any info from the Flames in the foreseeable future.

I'm pretty sure this is why he makes stuff up already

This. Gaudreau probably has a ton of money already, with 2 seasons and all his bounuses and endorsements. If he doesn't live like a millionaire once he misses a few paychecks he'll probably have enough to live like all of his friends back home for the foreseeable future. Even missing a few months probably wouldn't make a dent if he doesn't blow his money on big ticket purchases until this is resolved.
