I'm not an advanced stat nerd or anything, but it does have value. There are a ton of different factors in this analysis, and I think it bears giving some consideration to.

I think it's actually a really good list for once. That's often not the case with advanced stat analysis articles that I've read in the past.

I think you're dead wrong on this one. I hope it's not just because Monahan was left off the list.

That's just rank anti-intellectualism... Even if you only look at it for tidbits of information like the way Crosby retrieves loose pucks or how Barkov plays in transition it's interesting. PS - Berkshire watches way more hockey than you do, Erick.

Was ready to be pissed that O'Reilly wasn't on the list.

Left pleasantly surprised.

Gotta wonder how closely all those posters who take Monahan over Barkov have watched Barkov.

I take Barkov 1st in a redraft of that year.

Does MacKinnon even play center right now?

He's started to and this is supposedly his big breakout year at centre.

It was the future "C" factor.

Yes, but he finds himself on Duchene's wing sometimes because their center depth (Duchene / MacKinnon / Soderberg) was way better than their wing depth (Landeskog... then Blake Comeau, 39YO Iginla, 36YO Tanguay, etc )

I realize Barkov was somewhat of a late bloomer having to adjust to the NA game, but he hasn't broken 60 points or 30 goals yet whereas Monahan has already done both. Barkov may be more polished/well rounded of a center but Monahan has hockey IQ that's up there with the best of them. I don't think Barkov has exactly a clear edge on Monahan, at least not yet. And that would be putting a cap on Monahan, which would be silly for a guy that's 21.

If anything, Barkov is a very early bloomer.

This is like saying Gaudreau hasn't broken 80 points or 50 assists yet...

Barkov had 28 goals, 31 assists in 66 games last year. While being on a different, higher tier from Monahan as a defensive player.

The transition stuff is the most interesting as it's not talked about as much nor is it usually compiled in this way. And it might be the single most important part of a top-end center's job (though I guess that depends heavily on the system said C plays in).

Agreed. The article clearly states the criteria and unfortunately for Flames fans, Monohan doesn't make the grade. He clearly will/is in the mix but not as it stands now.

Funny how some get so bent on discrediting a list simply because the home town player isn't cherry picked into it.

My opinion has nothing to do with Monahan's exclusion as I feel he's a little overrated by Flames fans. Some of the rankings are poor regardless.

Rankings are poor?

Okay, since only you watching allows only you to have a valid opinion.

There were 1230 games played last year. Plus Playoffs.
There were 3690 games played last three years. Plus Playoffs.
There were 6150 games played last five years. Plus Playoffs.

How many did you watch?

Oh right, you're the advanced stats guy. I forgot that you know everything, including that which is yet to even unfold like these two young men's respective careers.

He was on a good pace. Let's see how they both fare this season.

There's so many irritating articles coming out all the time that it's understandable that posters don't give them much attention before disregarding them.

Personally I like stats that try to quantify positive plays with the puck, although I can't judge how reliable they are. Rankings are just a convention of sports writing. They give an article easy structure and automatic fuel for debates.

You mean, that they're both true?

That they're cherry-picked statements that while technically true are functionally useless.
