Default Matthew Tkachuk, Does he make the team.

What's everyone's thoughts on the Flames selection from the past draft? He's looking good so far in preseason playing with Bennett and Brouwer. Getting stronger with every game. Does he make it past the cup of coffee?

the point of giving him the cup of coffee is to find out if he can make it past the cup of coffee.

Answer is it's too soon to tell. All we know is that he's probably earned the 9 games to find out.

He's getting better. Certainly wouldn't have said he makes the team based on his craziness from development camp, but last night he was one of the better forwards in that game where almost all Flames forwards played like garbage.

I still think another year development is what's best for him

What if Gaudreau still haven't sign after Tkachuk plays 9 games, do you keep him around and use a year of ELC?

IMO yes.

With Colborne gone, he's already our best net-front power play guy.

He's made some good plays in his zone so far, though he's maybe a bit guilty of leaking out for a Hail Mary too often. Nothing some NHL coaching can't work on.

He is a good fit on any of the top three lines (with Johnny/Monny, with Bennett, with Backlund/Frolik). He makes every single one of those lines better. That to me is the measure of whether he should be on the team.

Just for fun... you're right about the best net-front option.

You think he's already better than Monahan?

Colborne was a terrible net-front pp guy BTW. He scored what 2 power play goals all season?

Monahan doesn't really stand in front of the net. He finds open ice in the slot.

Monahan plays high-slot, not in front of the net on the PP

He also had a good screen on the Brouwer goal:

Monahan plays the bumper. Different role.

I'd like to see him on the team this year and keep playing with Bennett and Brouwer. I think that could evolve into a fantastic line. And with Backlund - Frolik - (Insert 3rd) we effectively have two interchangeable 2nd/3rd lines which helps in sheltering some minutes. I think Tkachuk is the type of player that is passionate and hungry to grow his game, and he will see more tangible development playing on a line with Bennett and Brouwer then he would playing in the OHL another year.

What about Brouwer? Isn't he our best net front PP guy?

He has definitely earned his 9 games. And we won't know until that plays out whether he gets any more.

My belief, at this point though, is that he stays. As a couple people have mentioned, he goes to the net and is effective there - something the Flames desperately lack and need.

Unless the 9 games show that he simply can't handle the physicality of the NHL yet, I think he stays.

I think he will make the opening-day roster. The Tkachuk-Bennett-Brouwer line has looked good so far, so I think that's enough for him to make it. Beyond that, we'll see how the first nine games go.

As everyone else has said, he's earned a look so far. Then we will see against actual NHL rosters.

This is true. I just don't think he can play in the dirty areas and balls to the walls for all 82 games.

Nobody can - Ferland couldn't sustain his Canuck destruction for more than six games. He'll learn to pick his spots.

I think he stays - without him, the left wing depth is positively grim.
