He's on an AHL deal with the Heat.

The Flames have seen him everyday in practice and the rookie tournament for the past two weeks. Who are you to say he didn't get a good look

Good for Frattin. He's still up even though he's just on an AHL contract. I think he'll have a huge impact on the Heat this year. I wouldn't be surprised to see him get an NHL deal at some point if the FLames have major injury problems.

I want to see David Rittich get a preseason game.

I thought Kylington would get a bit longer of a look with Kulak and Wotherspoon. Burke has mentioned Kylington a few times over the last 6 months, so I imagine the organization as a whole are pretty high on him. Morrison has been doing well every time I have seen him anyways. He seems like a Jekyll and Hyde type of prospect - really good solid stretches that makes you think he is nearly NHL ready, and then long stretches where you wonder if he is even AHL capable. I hope he has ironed out those poor stretches now and has a nice supply of confidence, as he has some really nice tools.

You have to assume that Wotherspoon might be the last cut due to his waiver status this season, but maybe the Flames will try to sneak him down. He hasn't looked bad at all - he has remained 'unnoticeable', and that is what you want from that type of a defencemen. Kulak has looked better I thought, but Wotherspoon has been very steady. Probably the most 'steady' defensive prospect out there I think in terms of defence and lack of errors.

Honest question: is there a timeline for Pribyl's return? I haven't heard anything about how long he's expected out. I imagine he'll be assigned to Stockton to start, if for no other reason than conditioning and getting some game action. Just curious as to when we can expect to see him.

Wotherspoon always looks pretty steady. I'm not saying he's great but he never looks like he's in over his head. It's why it's strange that Hartley kept him in the press box for a fair bit last season. Maybe he's not a great locker room guy but I don't really know why this team flirts with paying mediocre defensemen like Russell millions when they can have this kid in their top 7 making way less than free agent money.

Wotherspoon is still only 23. Sure he's been in the organization a while but that's still young for a dman

I've heard zip about him this entire preseason.

Stockton starts on-ice training camp tomorrow. Since he's not going to stick around Calgary this year, I would imagine they want to get him down to start off the season right.

Absence of errors, is not presence of a positive impact. You're not going to win games 1-1.

your right, cause that outcome is impossible in the NHL

With a player in the mould of Wotherspoon, I would argue it is. You're not expecting the 6th D to be some sort of offensive catalyst - you want him to play 15 minutes a night and not eff anything up. Move the puck, clear the net etc. Not reinvent the wheel. That's Kylington's job.

Speculation on 960 tonight that the roster would be trimmed down to about 30 tomorrow.

Not every defencemen is or should be an offensive catalyst out there. Wotherspoon moves the puck well enough, and even Hartley thought he had some untapped offensive prowess that he wanted Wotherspoon to explore.

Maybe I am old-school, but it is nice to see mistake-free minutes by a defencemen. There is always room on a team for a guy who plays the game like him. That is what Wotherspoon gives you. I think his upside is a top 4 defencemen who will be the 'safe' guy in a pair with a higher-offensive upside but risky defencemen (like a Kylington, for instance). Just that steady eddie type that you throw out and know you can count on. That's pretty good in my books.

For guys like Andersson and Mangiapane, they probably could have stayed up longer, but for what purpose? They aren't going to make the team out of camp and it's probably way more beneficial for them to get into the AHL and start impressing the coaches there.

The Heat play their first preseason game on Friday, so it makes sense to get the guys who aren't fighting for a spot in Calgary down to Stockton to start working on their own stuff, rather than being stuck in big practice groups in Calgary.
