I think signing a contract, signalling he's willing to play elsewhere if management is unwilling to negotiate(since sep 11), is totally valid. perhaps the screw you was poor wording... is that why people are so upset? not over the tactic but my wording?

Signing a contract with another team in another league does not signal that you're willing to play elsewhere. It's basically a F-you I am playing somewhere else.
There is a lot at stake to throw that out, which a lot of us seem to understand, which I think you're missing in all this. He'll ruin his reputation, throw off the negotiation, lose fans, etc., all for 10-15% more to his salary.
I just don't think you're looking at the big picture and for some of us, its just an option that doesn't make any sense, hence why it was dismissed so quickly.
(Also not trying to be rude or dismissive, just providing my opinion)

It certainly didn't help.
Do you believe that management is unwilling to negotiate?

I disagree with just about all of this. 10-15% over the course of 7-8 years is could be as much as 10 or 11 million dollars.
If you were JG, and you believed you were worth 7 million dollars, and the team refused to negotiate, what would you do?
what are the options?
-cave and sign what the team wants.
-sit at home and do nothing.
-sign a contract elsewhere and wait until something gets worked out with the flames.
am i missing anything?

Although I'm not sure of the legal ramifications and it would cast Treliving in a negative light but personally I would LOVE if he went over Gross' head and talked directly to Johnny's parents. Brad has always been a consummate professional but I'd just love some kind of to Gross. Kind of seems like something Burke would love (behind closed doors).

My comments were based on Gross's comments of there being no contact since September 11th.
I have no idea if that statement is true or not.

Totally agree, so it won't happen. Just think Gross has been bush league as well.

On Friday night, Conroy said conversations are ongoing. I am not going to call either a liar.
It just looks like posturing to me.
But I find it unfathomable that the Flames would choose to be not interested in negotiating. That just isn't plausible in any shape or form.

Here's the thing for me, why even bring up the fact Johnny hasn't asked for a trade? It's not like anyone out there anywhere was saying he was. To me this reeks of setting the table for that very thing. Next thing we hear from Gross is "we cannot come to agreeable terms with Calgary, at this point Johnny is asking for a trade"
He made a point of a non existent point.

If I were intent on holding out, I can tell you I wouldn't be setting foot on a professional ice surface until after December 1 when I could no longer play in the NHL for this season.
I don't think Johnny is intent on holding out. I think he has one card, and he and his agent are playing it.
He'll sign for more than anyone in his draft class has gotten. That should really be enough.

Ah, I thought I was following the Gaudreau situation pretty closely, not close enough I guess. Still, this whole thing is getting absurd, he should've signed back when Monahan did. I'll never understand why a couple million dollars is a sticking point when we are talking the sums of money these guys make.
Market value yadda yadda, whatever. Gaudreau is going to walk away with at least 30 million on his next contract, does anyone seriously need any more than that?

That money means more to one person than it does to a rich owner.

No contact from the flames from sept 9 because Johnny didn't want to negotiate during the World Cup. Now that it's over there is contact again. Johnny will sign the day after a nice home cooked thanksgiving dinner I'll bet

so, Gaudreau thinks its ok to sign for 2, 3, of 4 million per year in the KHL, but he won't sign in the NHL for anything less than 7-8?!
talk about losing the PR battle...

A million dollars in cap space is far more meaningful to the rich owners than a million dollars in salary is to someone already slated to earn as much in a year as I will in my life.
It makes zero difference to the player's life, aside from satisfying his ego. It makes a material difference to the team's ability to ice a winning group.
