It already is. These threads are like a train wreck. You want to look away, but you just can't.

Maybe "changing their tune" means they've had enough negotiating and are now shopping the player.

The one time I'm not rolling my eyes at an Eklund blog/tweet.

I highly doubt that. It means they've probably decided to move towards a compromise. Hopefully Johnny's agent will do the same and we can finally end this nightmare and get on with the season.

if there was even a 0.0001% chance of that, a guy like eklund would have mentioned it for the drama and the click bait.

I'm confident this is definitely good news.

Despite their similar numbers on paper what people forget is Kopitar has never not led his team in points whereas Toews has always been 2nd or 3rd in scoring on his team. It's kind of the same reasoning why Panarin who put up the same points as Gaudreau is not considered on the same tier as Gaudreau by certain people.

Doesn't hurt that Toews has always been attached to the hip to a HoFer, either Hossa or Kane. Last year he was not and he didn't even hit 60 points.
For the record, if you look at the past 3-4 years, Kopitar averages roughly 1 point per 82 games greater than Toews. You can look at last year, but I think there are some reasons to discount:

1. The Kane/Panarin line got the best offensive situations, including PP, while Toews played a slightly more defensive role than normal.

2. The Hawks lost Sharp and Saad in the offseason leaving Toews with an aging Hossa and a windmill of garbage rotating throughout the season on his LW.

3. Fair to Kopitar too, but the hockey, betweem consistently deep playoff runs, and Team Canada events caught up with Toews a bit last year. I think from those that watch him regularly, Toews has a bit of an extra jump in his step during the World Cup compared to last season... I think an offseason of rest did him well.

Note that even during the past season, his possession stats when neutralized for QoC and linemates, he was still extremely effective. The offensive plays just weren't available like they have been in the past.

So, I think when you look at the entire picture of Toews' career, last season was a bit of a misnomer and put him in a position to fail offensively. Not a true dip in talent level as the sub 60 point season would lead you to believe. Offensively its a very neutral skillset with Kopitar.

Getting to defense, its really hard to point fingers either way. These guys are both considered Selke contenders every season. Toews plays the shutdown role for the best international team in the world, and does it consistently well. He's scored points in the role. And he's shutdown elite players consistently. If you are to argue in Kopitar's favour it would be a very, very small win.

Both great players. I just don't see the margin of difference that you are stuck on.

Inflation doesn't exist in a cap world. It can go up or down. The amount of cap that teams feel should be allocated to one player can go up or down. The value of player X on team Y versus player Z on team AA can be either greater or less than the other. It's not as simple as inflation, nor will it ever be. The exchange rate in Canada is many points worse than when Tarasenko signed his contract which in real NHL dollars actually translates to DE-flation for the NHL and revenue collection, something that was being bandied about all summer.

My simple formula though (SUBJECTIVE AS HELL) is 4x6 + 4x9 = 7.5 AAV. Gaudreau would be 7.125 under that HIGHLY SUBJECTIVE view point.
Sorry Bingo, I didn't mean to imply that you were intentionally being subjective. I was just saying that in any valuation approach, inflation (monetary or cap related) is a consideration.

Hope you're wrong. Doesn't seem like they've been negotiating that hard if they haven't talked in a while

You don't actually have to talk to negotiate, assuming talk means face to face or telephone communications. You can exchange offers, email, etc.

I'm glad gaudreauovertime does not negotiate contracts for flames.
It will come. Don't think we're anywhere close to looking down the avenues of shopping him. He will be the face of our franchise

Strikes me as the kind of guy that pays over the sticker price on a new car because it's the "last one available in black".

I don't think so. As I recall... The view of it was just skewed cause the players started with a pretty reasonable offer that was close to the final deal. It's just the league started with a ridiculous counter offer that most agreed was asking too much. Plus the league had a "hill we will die on" attitude throughout the negotiation.

The point more is that the deal ended up exactly what everyone knew it would be. I remember the predictions in early July that year... And that's pretty much exactly how it ended up when the deal was done in January.

That's how I feel with the gaudreau contract. Everyone knows pretty much the number it's going to be... It's frustrating that all this posturing has to happen that could result in him missing camp completely or even some regular season games.

No **** Sherlock.

I meant talk as in communicate. Obviously.

And per McKenzie, they haven't been doing much of it.
