Because Bennett is a competitor and the future captain. Guys like Bennett win road games, playoff games and (hopefully) Stanley Cups. Be ready to pay him, not Johnny.

Lol. Johnny not a competitor?
You do know you can pay both of them, right?

Depends what you pay Gaudreau. And yes, you can probably still pay Bennett too, but somewhere, sometime, you lose a good player if you overpay.
Johnny is a much better offensive player, no doubt. Kane is much better offensively than Toews too. Kane and Gaudreau are by far the two most entertaining players to watch in the league IMO. I would build a team around Toews over Kane 10 times out of 10 (and I would bet most GMs would say the same). Same with Bennett over Gaudreau for me (though I am not sure many GMs would say the same...yet). Not a popular opinion I know, but everything I have heard about these guys, Bennett is all about winning and Johnny is all about being Johnny Hockey and... everything that comes with that. I don't think he wants to be here, so sad as it would be to lose MAYBE the most talented Flame we have ever had, as Calgary4Life said, its all about the team.

Didn't read the thread, so if this has already been brought up, well the point still stands.
Those of you wanting to give Gaudreau 7m or higher should look more closely at his stats for home games vs away games.
There is a wide disparity in the stats that suggests his contributions to the success of the team while on enemy ice isn't helping his case.
I understand completely why the Flames management team is holding firm on their side of the negotiations.

Yeah must have been pure accident he finished 6th in the league for scoring. Let's tire kick over home and away stats.

Troll is using KISS.....but keeping it simple doesn't apply here. You got a salary cap. It's not about paying just both but you know that. Or you wouldn't bait this crew like this. Keep going.

Bob Mckenzie: No talks between Flames & Gaudreau
I'll update the title if something minor happens or there is actually new "news". If it's major news, I'm sure a new thread will be posted by SureLoss right after it happens.

Still all need to be signed so this may just be a new norm in the cap world we live in. We're not the only ones which doesn't mean were not allowed to speculate and even expect the worst but it does put things in perspective. The deal will get done.

One can't build a military with just infantry and expect to win a war, you need snipers too. Yes, Bennett has some jam to his game but he has a long way to go to build a resume on winning and clutch play to even be mentioned in the same breath as Johnny.

Where did you get the impression that Johnny is not all about winning?
USHL Championship
NCAA Championship
WJC Championships
Our playoff MVP as a rookie
By all accounts, he is hyper competitive and a big time big game player.
Where are you coming up with that?

I'm using KISS? The guy I quoted literally said you save your money to pay Bennett, not Gaudreau.
Bennett is my 2nd favorite Flame, and I really hope he breaks out in a big way and we can justify giving him close to Monahan money. A young core of Gaudreau (7.5), Monahan (6.4), and Bennett (~6) would be tremendous value for the next 7 years. That's 19.4 locked up in 2 star centers and a perennial art ross contender.
