When did the meaningless games start? November? December? January? February? As far as I can tell, his scoring rate was pretty consistent all year.
If you think that any team in the league would be harping at Gaudreau to play better defense, I don't know what to tell you. Gaudreau can't stop pucks and Gaudreau can't stop the team from icing the puck 300 times a game because the coach insists on forcing a strategy that the rest of the league has adapted to. I for one am excited to see how Gaudreau does playing for a coach who is more than a one trick pony. I think he has a chance to really benefit from that.

Right now I hope both sides are just sitting on their positions for a long-term deal: 8M for Gaudreau, something less than Gio for the Flames.
Both sides are staring at the gap between them, hoping that - should the other side move - they can use that new position as a starting point for more talks.
I think one of the sides will eventually put up a number in the middle (7M-7.5M), call it "non-negotiable", and then negotiate details like 7 or 8 years.
Anything under 6 years is, to me, a failure for both. But I remain hopeful that the scenario I just outlined is where they're at.

Agreed. It's a total gamble, but if I were a betting man, I would bet on Gaudreau to be at Patrick Kane's level in 2 or 3 years, at which point given inflation, he will be demanding a much higher AVV. And that will be right in our theoretical window when the rebuilding should be in full fruition. Signing him for something long term now in that $7.5 to $8 million range would be shrewd in the long run.
Sure, it is based on a few assumptions on what the future holds, but it is no different than people saying that the Flames should use all the leverage they have right now because in could affect Bennett and Tkachuk negotiations one day. Two players that have not shown what Gaudreau has shown and may never. Really, why lowball Gaudreau and force a bridge contact just to hand him all the leverage in a few years?

Nobody is belittling Monahan anymore so than they are belittling Johnny. There have been tons of posts critiquing Johnny's past performance and questioning his ability to perform in the future. As well as people calling into question his personal character. Questioning Monahan's dependency on Gaudreau is completely legitimate in that scope.
I take it you think a 8yr 6.38M - 6.75M AAV offer is equitable and fair? That's an insult. Its no wonder the two sides aren't talking.
|
Haha I was being sarcastic.
If it was up to me, I'd back 10 truck loads of cash onto Johnny's front lawn.

Tarasenko and Ekblad contracts set the bar, just like Kane and Doughty's a few years earlier. Signing a guy who finished 6th in scoring to a 7.5M-8M AAV wouldn't be any more unprecedented than what Gaudreau himself has done over his first 2 years.

I negotiate for a living. You seem to forget that there are two parties and we have no idea what movement there has been either way.
BTW that word, "unprecedented". I don't think it means what you think it does.

No kidding.
You might be surprised at the other parties' position and might tell them as much, but introducing emotion to negotiation is generally a bad mix.
Sometimes there is just no deal to be had on the first set of parameters (sounds like might the case here) then try shifting the parameters and start again. JG can't sell his services to any other NHL team so he really doesn't have alot of alternatives here, other than sit which I would think he really doesn't want to do.

So would Gaudreau's contract ask of $64m ($8mx8) be the largest RFA contract awarded under current CBA?
How about all time? Crosby got a higher AAV, but a smaller overall contract value. Ovechkin got more than $64m as an RFA, but he's the only one I can think of of the top of my head.
So where does Gaudreau rank on the "Biggest value RFA contracts of all time" list?
And where does he deserve to rank?

It would the largest contract ever awarded to a player with 5 years of RFA term left and with only 2 years experience.

It would be the largest 10.2c RFA contract. It likely will be so long as it's not a bridge contract.
