They could also pull a New England Patriots and go 11-0.

How many points is having to trade away someone talented for cheap options because you ####ed up your cap worth?

Who said the Flames are a bubble team?

I can agree to that but I don't think 'why' will matter if Gaudreau signs for $9.5m+/yr after a 2-3 year bridge. The end result will be that the Flames are in a tough spot right as their cup window opens. If that happens because the two sides are 750k apart or something, most people will think the team screwed up.

JG could get injured at any point. In fact, very few players play 82 games in this era because star players are expected to block shots and go into dirty areas. It's not like the times when Gretzky had a goon on his line and Gretz' only job was to score goals. If you're season can't handle 11 games without your best guy, then you're never meant to make the playoffs

No, it is not an insult. It is an (assumed) offer in a negotiation.
Is Gaudreau asking for $8 or $8.5M an insult? No. It is an (assumed) ask in a negotiation.
Neither is insulting.
You are attempting to create animosity by making the offer from one side personal. You need to stop with that crap.

In any negotiation you don't just come out and offer the only amount you're willing to sign him to. You start lower than you expect so you have room to move.
It's not insulting, stop saying it is.
We also have to keep in mind that paying a player in Gaudreau's situation so highly would, in all honesty, be viewed negatively across the league. It's akin to the offer sheet insanity that Lowe had with Vanek and Penner. You completely throw the market askew when you sign a deal that doesn't make sense in the scenario. I'd argue that one of the reasons the Oilers are where they are is because of their actions and the impact those deals had across the league.
This is not a simple negotiation.
|
I negotiate for a living lol.
Its fine for an initial offer, but we're almost a week into training camp, and there has been no movement off that point.
Tarasenko and Ekblad contracts set the bar, just like Kane and Doughty's a few years earlier. Signing a guy who finished 6th in scoring to a 7.5M-8M AAV wouldn't be any more unprecedented than what Gaudreau himself has done over his first 2 years.

Do you? Because your position on this hasn't indicated as such. Gaudreau's demands are just as out of whack. Both sides need to move.
And it's unprecedented in that he's a player who has virtually no leverage, he's not even technically an RFA.

Oh, is that what happened?
I was under the impression it was just some people on a forum with no input or involvement in the negotiations whatsoever who had been saying that.

Ekblad was signed after 2 years but has one more year on his ELC. The Panthers are still buying 4 years of UFA status and the same goes for Tarasenko which should push Johnny down to 7-7.25. In addition Ekblad is 20-21 so younger than Johnny now.
I would be happy with anything $8M or less but I don't think the Flames go there. My thoughts are they max out at $7M on full term which is a good deal for Johnny considering he has more than half of that conteact as a UFA

Do you think there is a destiny component at play here? You build a team with the hopes that everyone stays healthy. Most bubble teams are playoff teams if things go well and important players stay healthy. If we miss the playoffs by 3 points because of a Gaudreau-less start, that doesn't mean we weren't meant to make the playoffs. That just means we didn't utilize all of our assets.

K here's a different scenario
Maybe a bridge deal is the way to go?
What I mean is no one wants to lose Johnny for a bag of magic beans. But what if we've already got those beans ?
What I'm saying is sign Johnny to say a 3 year bridge. In those 3 years you'll know what you have in Bennett and Tkackuk. What's to say in 3 years time those 2 don't turn into the next Getzlaf/Perry duo? A couple big strong forwards to keep pace in the Western Conference would make losing (having to trade Johnny) a lot easier to swallow.
And it's not like the Flames lose him for nothing if at the end of the 3 years management decides those 2 are more valuable than Johnny.

ugh, why is it taking so long to sign a $7M/yr contract?....
It just seems inevitable that's what it'll come down to. 7 seems about right. The Gio cap thing is ######ed.

Gaudreau is not bigger than the team.
If he holds out, he holds out. The team's record over a 10 game period (or whatever), does not define what he's worth.
