Don Cherry is making weirder noises than usual tonight.
edit: this was posted in the wrong thread, but it's perfect for this one too

He is also a marquee star without arbitration rights, and is not offer-sheet eligible. At some point it simply does not matter how good a player Gaudreau is. He is not "worth" $8.0 m because there are no competing offers to drive his price in that direction, and there won't be for another five years.

Not entirely true.
If he signs a 1 year deal he gets all that stuff

I'm with nik on this one, I think this is a holdout that lasts into the season.
Next thought assuming that happens. If the Flames do well out the gate... That starts to weaken Gaudreau's leverage. I think Calgary gets him closer to their number.
If Calgary does poorly, well... I still don't think they sign him for 8, but they may be willing to blink first into 7 territory is my guess. Once that happens I suspect Gaudreau drops and a deal can get done. So I can't imagine this lasts past October.

What do you if Bennett has a break out year and scores 70? What about Tkachuk in 3 or 4 years? All of the sudden you have 5 RFAs making 8 million and you are totally effed.

He's not signing a 1 year deal unless it's in the KHL.
Hopefully this dispels the golly gee shucks BS where Johnny doesn't care about the money. Not that I blame him for trying to get the best deal but let's not sugar coat it.

Yeah I feel a bit duped and naive that I believed Johnny that he didn't really care about the money and stuff...

So a bridge contact is 4 years correct? If that's what Johnny wants, what does he get? Or does he want 5 years so he goes straight to ufa on his next contact?

The Flames don't want a four year deal, that would drive him right to the door of free agency, they obviously don't want a five year.
If this isn't long term think we'll see a two or three year contract.

Don't worry, some people still actually think that. Some actually think he'll cave days before opening night due to his pure passion for hockey. It's his nickname afterall!

Then you dump the likes of Brouwer and Frolik. Johnny is worth $8M he is the best player on every team he has played for including a team that has a player with a "Jesus" nickname.
I think a team can afford to pay 4 forwards top dollar. I have been firm in my belief that you pay your stars and the money that kills a team is overpaying for utility players.
Do I want Johnny to sign a 8 year deal at Gio's money? Of course but I rather go 8x8 than 6x6 because I believe this teams window to win is the next contract for Gaudreau. I think the window is still 2 years from opening so I am not stoked on having our star player only singed 4 years beyond that

of course Johnny cares about the money. I'm sure it's not the only thing he cares about but I'm sure it ranks very highly on things to care about here.
For anyone unsure, ask yourself a question. Would you care about a difference of $1.5MM/year? And if you never really thought you could get it, but by holding my position you could squeeze another $0.5-0.75MM/year would you do it? hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm mmmmmmmmmmmmm
Personally I would, but then again I may just be scrooge mcduck over here I guess.

Unless you're the Blackhawks or the Kings, most windows barely last 4 years, then you re-tool, and hope you did a good enough job that a new one opens up.
Our legitimate cup chances with this group will come within the next 6 years, if it doesn't, we'll have to mix it up and likely trade one of the four anyway. Signing JG for 6 years is plenty and would be the smarter play.

Of course I want to get paid what I think I'm worth.
But I also want to be on a winning team.

Agree to disagree I suppose. I think Johnny is a potential generational player and I want him to be a flame as long as possible. If signing Johnny to more money costs this team a guy like Lance Bouma so be it

So it's Gaudreau making $7.5 that causes the team to be screwed in that scenario? Star players often get over paid and while I wholeheartedly agree that the Flames need to stand their ground there may come a time when they will pay more than they want to.
At some point you compare the downside of overpaying a guy by $500k against the downside of Agreeing to a different deal. Gaudreau is telling the team if you want me for long term, this is what it will cost. That is his right. How badly do the Flames want a long term deal?
