I doubt they don't try to make the other side sweat by taking it to the very end at this point.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but don't both sides actually WANT to make a deal?

If anyone is posting here as some kind of secret PR guy for Gaudreau's agent, he should probably get a new agent. Somehow I doubt the Flames are reading CP to determine the contract they want to give out.

My desire remains a 6 year deal at under $7M per.
If he's getting paid after 6 he's getting paid after 8. If he's leaving after 6 he's leaving after 8.
We get to take 6 years of a favorable cap hit through his prime in exchange for risking paying up or losing him 2 years early.
He gets to hit UFA at 29 instead of 31.

Take a million or less per year to shrink the Flames window 2 years when it hasn't really opened yet?
Rather keep him for the full 8 and 90% of his prime years

Ya, that's honestly what I'm thinking. I'd rather have that extra million available to fill out the roster. And then there's the downside risk protection side of it as well. It just feels like those UFA years are getting priced on an unrisked basis right now. I really don't want to pay for those unrisked and water down the benefit of 5 RFA years.
Totally see it from your side though.

I can't believe this has dragged on for this long. Hopefully both sides can find a way to compromise and meet in the middle before opening night. Getting off to a good start this season is hugely important for this franchise, especially with all the new faces and the new coaching staff. Last year's three goalie fiasco was bad enough, and this Gaudreau thing would be an even bigger distraction.

Fair enough. What I struggle with has been the utilization of those cap dollars. For instance I like Brouwer but if those are the types of contracts we have to avoid because Johnny is getting paid then so be it. The same for Bouma, Frolik, Engellend, Stajan, Bollig, Wideman etc. I would rather pay Johnny and fill the roster with ELC players myself
