Trouba would have to sign the offer sheet too.... he probably doesn't.

Laine might be a star some day, maybe even as good as Gaudreau. Gaudreau is already a proven star. The Jets would be idiots for not making that deal.

I love Gaudreau but Laine has Ovechkin potential (better than Gaudreau), I just don't see the Jets doing that. They would also be sacrificing Laine's ELC and getting Gaudreau's $7m+ cap hit.
I can appreciate the opinion that the Flames wouldn't want to do it either. I think that's entirely possible.

Laine does not have Ovechkin potential. He plays a similar style, but Laine does not have the potential to become arguably the best goal scorer of all time. By that comparison, Gaudreau has Gretzky potential

Many scouts think he has that potential, take it up with them. Gaudreau is unlikely to get much better than he already is IMO

Ovie (and Malkin) were as hyped as any prospect has ever been from Russia. On the same level as Crosby & McDavid. Florida tried to use a loophole to draft Ovechkin with their last pick in 2003, because of his age - his birthday was 1 day late for being eligible for the 2003 draft. He was that special it was worth it to try cheeky shenanigans. If scouts are saying Laine has Ovie-potential, they are being rather generous. Is he really any better than your average 2nd overall pick?

I was only half joking because I wanted to see who would play around with that type of a deal.
I think you are right, though IMO trading a highly touted prospect for a proven star isn't uneven, even if the prospect has a higher ceiling. Calgary would be the one giving up the known quantity.
I sure like Scheifle and Wheeler. I like Trouba too, though he seems to be a problem child. Expansion comes into this equation as well.

I thought some ranked him higher than Eichel, who in turn was said to be good enough to be a first overall in any of the recent previous drafts (though on viewing how he is ahead of Mackinnon is beyond me).

6th in NHL scoring in his Sophomore year? Yeah, super unlikely.

That's because he'll be 19 in his sophomore year.

On a side note, are offer sheets still allowed or has a deadline on them passed already?
|
Well if the Jets match an offer sheet and Trouba sits out until he is traded, he will be sitting out for at least 1 calendar year. Players who sign an offer sheet can't be traded for a calendar year, IIRC.
And yes he can still sign an offer sheet.

I haven't heard as good as Ovechkin. I've heard Ovechkin's style "an Ovechkin style winger". If he was a 60 goal scoring potential, he'd have gone 1st

Teams are keen on their own prospects, but a prospect - even of Laine's pedigree - is not worth Gaudreau.

Exactly - scouts aren't saying 'he's as good as Ovechkin', they are saying his shot - his release - might be as good as anyone since Ovechkin.

I don't think that the Jets will be looking for a Brouwer-type player at 4.5M to provide cover for Laine to play.
Laine survived Perry's dirt at the World as a 17 year old and ended the MVP of the tournament. Gaudreau was benched in the 1st playoff game for safety reasons against the Ducks in game #1 of the playoff series.
PS Sorry for following this thread away from just taking about Trouba...... along with the last 10 or so posters.

LOL - posters were talking about the kind of package that would include Trouba in the trade request (the subject of the thread). You decide to take the opportunity to sneer at the Brouwer contract and Gaudreau's grit and then call out people for "taking away from just talking about Trouba"? Gimme a break.

Utterly amazed at the lines ricardo continually draws in his head. Usually the easiest way from Point A to Point B is a straight line, but ricardo's points get on a roller coaster that and through Narnia.

A young RHD is the biggest hole in the Leafs rebuild. I could see a deal built around Trouba for JVR.

I have been called out twice on this thread for mentioning Hamilton and then Gaudreau..... both in comparison to Trouba. The last 2 pages have had minimal mention of Trouba... and had become a comparison of Laine to Gaudreau.
I was following the conversation on the the thread.... not leading it. I was simply was pointing out the irony of the thread integrity police enforcement policies.
I wasn't sneering a Brouwer's contract... It is something that the Flames were forced to do by the make-up of the team ....
