Not happening. The Jets would be a laughing stock and no one would want to go there again, or, re-sign. A player throws a tantrum and you solve it by trading someone else? Terrible precedent to set.
Let me just get ahead of the snappy replies while I'm at it

While the city itself is probably the least desirable I feel their management doesn't help matters as players that want to win a cup can't be enticed by their penchant for being a budget team. It's a small town team run with a small team attitude.

They're a budget team because they're in a small market. Calgary was in the same boat as Winnipeg not long ago, and if this energy downturn is prolonged, we may be again. I spent enough of my adult life as the fan of a hockey team handcuffed by financial disparity that I have sympathy for other teams in the same boat. There but for the grace of god (and the price of a barrel of WCS) go I.

What's baffling is people who don't look at the big picture. Yes, he's playing 22 minutes a night, but mostly on his off-side. He'd like a move to somewhere where he gets to play big minutes on his preferred side, because that is where he feels his potential can be realized and therefore have the most success. Is that baffling?
If you thought you were being under-utilized at work by your employer, and weren't going down the path you thought was most likely to get you where you wanted to be, would you not look for a change?

I agree with this. Also when factoring in everything else regarding the situation it doesn't paint a great picture for the jets. Playing in the coldest, smallest market is one thing but the team also has been historically bad with only 2 playoff appearances in the entire time being in the league and never winning a playoff game.
The Jets missed the boat on Hamonic big time

if only the jet's coaches and management team wanted trouba to succeed, instead they keep holding him down......
wonder how troubs would be feeling today if the jets had signed him to the deal he wanted over the summer. he would have woke up a few months later with a sever case of "seller's remorse" as it dawned on him what he had done.

About as dumb as trading Monahan for Bo Horvat.

Trouba, Laine, Scheifle, Wheeler for Gaudreau, Wideman, prospect that's not Tkatchuk.

Well this was primarily the reason there was opposition to moving the team back to Winnipeg in the first place and using today's dollar is a bit of a cop out as a few years ago the dollar was fine and they still operated like it was a $0.70 dollar.

Yes, an exempt defender should have more value to the Jets than an equivalent non-exempt defender.
Especially with Enstrom requiring to be protected due to the NMC, along with Byfuglien, and Myers being protection worthy. Getting an exempt defenseman for Trouba and allowing them to go the 7-3-1 route is probably quite a bit more valuable than getting a non-exempt defender and having to decide to go 8-1 (likely) or 7-3-1 and losing Myers.
However, the difference between 7-3-1 and 8-1 for the Jets would probably be protecting three of Dano, Armia, Burmistrov and Lowry and having them all unprotected. So may not be too huge of a deal.

Maybe a stupid question, but here it goes: What stops Cheveldayoff from calling up a few executives from other teams and asking them to sign Trouba to an offer sheet, for the purpose of matching it?

I know you're joking but I doubt the Jets trade Laine for Gaudreau straight up.

Aside from the NHLPA accusing the league of collusion...probably nothing stops him from doing that. But even if Trouba signs with another team and Winnipeg matches, he can just sit out until he's traded and now he'd have a falsely inflated contract that would make him even harder to trade.
On a side note, are offer sheets still allowed or has a deadline on them passed already?

He still needs to sign the offersheet. If Trouba is that desperate to get out of Winnipeg, he may not be willing to risk Winnipeg matching.

I figured it might fall under collusion, but figured that would more likely apply to a scenario whereby the a significant portion of, or the entire league (rather than just two parties) are colluding (see Kirk Gibson, MLB).
