I'm glad to hear that Wideman looks invigorated out there.
If he can return to form, that can potentially be a big win for the Flames.
Can't wait to see our goaltending this year. Both in the NHL, and in the system.

I notice if you go to the flames website it's header is "roster reduced" but it is a dead link. Is there pending cuts tonight?

CALGARY, AB - The Calgary Flames announced today that they have assigned Brayden Burke (Lethbridge/WHL), Aaron Hyman (Calgary/WHL), Matthew Phillips (Victoria/WHL) and Nick Schneider (Medicine Hat/WHL) to their respective junior teams. The Flames also announced that they have released Dennis Kravchenko from Calgary's training camp and he has accepted an invitation to the Stockton Heat's training camp.

Sometimes they formally announce it beforehand, sometimes they don't.
Edmonton group will be most of Group C. Calgary group will be a mix of players from Group A & B.

Ferland is a tough one to read. He stood out as being an NHL player in terms of all of his abilities. What line he will play on moving forward is up to him. He will be one of the players I'll be paying more attention to in the games.

Other than playing against Vancouver in the playoffs, what has he done to show he is more than a 4th liner?

Team B
Hamilton is Hamilton, better than the rest of the D-men
Jyrki Jokipakka played well. Looking forward to seeing him in game action to see where he slots in.
Bruce looked the best I have watched him play. Still a long long long way to go.
Culkin and Wotherspoon are both close to being NHL D-men, Spoon slightly ahead. Culkin will probably make his NHL debut this season provided he's healthy just to see what he's got. Sort of like what they did with Sieloff last year.
Andersson will be good down the road. Not there yet.
Grossman is Douglas Murray. The only way he signs is if he wants to be the captain of the Heat.
Luke Adam - Probably the best of the invited players. Not an NHL caliber player.
Mikkel Aagaard - if he signs, it'll be likely an AHL deal.
Jamie Devane - A 13th AHL forward.
Ryan Lomberg - tenacious prospect. Quality motor. Only wish he was over 6'0" because he would be an NHL player. Size may limit him.
Alex Chaisson - He is a 3rd or 4th line forward. If the Flames are forced to put him on the first line, something has gone wrong with the other options that are available. I'd rather split Frolik and Backlund and put Frolik up on the first line to prevent that scenario.
Lance Bouma - Looking like he's trying to have a season like two years ago. Lots of quality shots on net. Picking corners on the goalies.
Dillon Dube - oozes skill. Someone to keep your eye on for a few years.
Eetu Tuulola - continues his good play.
Emile Poirier and Hunter Shinkaruk - Poirier did nothing in the practice to stand out in a positive sense. Shinkaruk was better than him, but I have my doubts on his ability to play top 6 minutes. Will have to see them play in the preseason to get a better read.
Matt Stajan - I wonder if he would be better off on the wing, especially with the Flames center depth.

Team A
Gio and Wideman both looked better than the rest. Not a surprise.
Kanzig has improved a lot. Has to work on his lateral movement mostly. He could eventually be a Deryk Engelland type guy if he works out his flaws.
Morrison and Dyukov were okay. Both AHL quality guys.
Robak and Hyman should and likely will not earn contracts
Angelidis - AHL vet
Bennett looked great. Hoping for a breakout season. Great chemistry with Tkachuk and Brouwer. That would be a great line. I think because of how they work together, Tkachuk will make the team this season. Still slightly slow, and chewing on his mouthguard the entire time, but other than that he looked ready. Would have to figure he gets the 9 game try out and see how it goes. Brouwer is as advertised.
Burke was cut today. Wouldn't be surprised if he comes back next year.
Carroll looked the same as he did.
Jankowski was good again. Could make the NHL out of camp. of the bubble players like Shinkaruk Ferland etc, he was the best of the bunch.
Korpikoski played as The Scorpion put it, like an Edmonton Oilers' 4th liner. Not going to make the team unless he's willing to go to Stockton.
Mangiapane continued to play well.
Klimchuk had a few quality passes and snipes. The problem with him is that he always looks good in practice and yet is only okay in games. Hoping that he starts translating practice Klimchuk into game Klimchuk.
Smith - Still slow. Other than that was alright.

I'm not sure yet. It really depends on how much time I have over the next couple weeks. If I do it'll be after the preseason, but before the NHL season.
When we do our next episode of our show I'll have a better idea (already have one done after Penticton)

One guy who stood out in Group C to me was Grigoriev. I had to look him up to see who he was.
I thought he performed better than Kylington.
Don't want to bash the guy but he looks pretty skinny and it always felt a bit forced with him...like he didn't know exactly where to play it.
To be expected from a 19 year old playing a pro game. I think he could be great but he needs a few years in the AHL still.
Aside from that, my 3.5year old boy loved it. Stood by the spot where players come out and each one went out of their way to high five him. Gio was the best with him...great ambassador and Captain.
Oh and the goalies in Group C were solid...Tyler Parsons and Chad Johnson. Other than that not a ton of standouts...others may have noticed more as I was keeping an eye on a 3 year old!

Big thanks to everyone doing write ups and sharing their observations! Always a mixture of excitement and jealousy (because I can't attend in person) this time of year.
Feels like it's been a loooong summer this year and I can't wait to see how all the new pieces come together. Especially the coaching and goaltending.

Training camp isn't enough time however, to fully flush old habits out of players' instincts built from 3 years of playing that way, so don't be surprised if the Flames come out of the gate slow, making mistakes in the process and looking lost at times. From everything I've read, Gulutzan's vision isn't to choke scoring or offensive opportunities, but he certainly places an emphasis on defensive responsibilities for all 5 players and transitions up ice as a 5-man unit. It'll take time for players to not over-adjust after getting corrected, potentially impacting their focus to the offensive end of things, but they will.
My concern is Monahan and Backlund not being able to partake in training camp (potentially, depending on their injuries). Key position that will certainly have a different style from Gulutzan that they'll have to learn in real game situations when points matter. Part of the reason why I'm predicting the Flames will come out slow. Hopefully, the team as a whole learns quickly because if it goes beyond 20 games, they'll have to really tear it up in the final three quarters of the season.
In the end, I can see the Flames numbers see a small dip from a GF perspective, but a bigger gain with respect to GA and goal differential, which will make the Flames a better team.
|
Basically a carbon copy of a post made in September 2009 but swap Sutter for Gulutzan.
The team should be better because they have actual NHL calibre goaltending now. If they don't make the playoffs it's definitely not going to be Bob Hartley or Hiller's fault.
I can see the Flames taking a step back because Gulutzan wasn't the best hire, not because he's undoing "bad" habits. I want to be wrong though.

Before we hired a GM, who were you hoping we'd get? I could be wrong, but I would be willing to bet it wasn't Treliving.
