Assuming Johnny plays to 38, he's got maybe 15 years left. 8 is more than half of that.

I doubt this has any meaning, but I still wouldn't be shocked to see a shorter term deal based on where negotiations are at.

In todays NHL i would say forwards are in their prime between 20-30. If Johnny leaves us after signing a 7 years deal, who cares, he will be on the decline. Same with Monahan.

I wonder who the first team to try this will be. In a cap world, we're seeing team after team get into trouble paying for players approaching 30/on the wrong side of it.

At some point, someone is going to try trading a 29-year old star playing a year or two away from free agency for a big return and trying to rebuild on the fly with an extra eight or nine million in cap space.

Elite forwards can be effective well into their 30s. The key is to manage the risk and to avoid contracts that take them past 35.

They can be effective, but can they be $10M players?

Where are negotiations "at" exactly?

Given that forwards tend to decline after ~33 IMO a 4 year bridge deal isn't a bad idea. Give him a proper 8 year contract from 27-34.

St.Louis won the Art Ross at 37.

So it's possible but not the norm by any means.

Still, I wouldn't dump an elite player on general principle once they reach an arbitrary age.

The major risk is that you're basically driving him right to the front door of unrestricted free agency with a four year deal. It's nice to map it out, but doubtful Gaudreau is going to go for an 8 year deal without some major heartache and drama along the way.

4 years keeps him an RFA. If he wants to sign an offer sheet we will gladly pocket the four first rounders. Any term shorter than 8 and longer than 3 on that third deal would be a win for the Flames. In that situation, 8 is what the player usually wants not the team.
