Agreed. I let my exasperation get the better of me. Apologies for the dickish manner of my posts.
Gaudreavertime, I harbor no animosity towards you. In fact, I usually find you quite novel -- it's just that you can also be extremely annoying. No offense, I know I can be abrasive as well.
Hopefully Johnny signs soon.

You have stated multiple times in this thread that Johnny is an 80 point player. And you have called anyone who challenged that statement pedantic.
Okay, put your money where your posting style is:
Over/under at 79.5 points. If he gets 80 points you win. If he doesn't, I win. No conditions, no hedging on games played. 80 points or not 80 points.
I am there for any size you like up to $1,000 but minimum $100.
Show us that you actually believe what you are demanding that the Flames should (unconditionally) believe.
Put up or shut up.

By re-signing with his current team at Yzerman's ask he basically waived his UFA leverage. He left money on the table to stay where he was comfortable.
The other thing is that he's already peaked offensively and is not quite the scoring machine he was a few years back.
Johnny's situation is different in that his most productive seasons are probably going to be the next 3.

No he didn't. He had UFA status. He was free to talk to all teams. The fact that he signed with Tampa does not alter that in the slightest.

I don't remember the exact numbers, but with the difference in taxes from Florida to Ontario. Toronto would have had to sign him for (approx) 11 mil/ season to compete, maybe more. Not comparable situations at all.

Not really sure what your point is but it seems very semantics based
He left money on the table.

As CalgaryFan1988 points out, he left the taxman's money on the table. It appears that he never received an offer that would have given him more take-home pay than he is going to get in Tampa.

Post Feb 11: GP-29, G-13, A-8, P-21. Now a 0.72 PPG player.

Highly misleading. Backlund's struggles came when he was buried on the 3rd/4th lines with Bollig, Jones, Bouma, Raymond.
Backlund
The 40 game stretch between Nov 05 and Feb 11 seems to be the most "normal" stretch. You can see his shooting percentage% spiked in the late parts of the season, but it was also unsustainably low in the early parts of the season along with his bizarrely reduced ice time.
...I'll take an average 0.63 PPG any day from him. That's a 52 point pace.

https://www.thestar.com/sports/leafs...ee-agency.html
The tax differences and the eight year contract made it so he didn't leave money on the table.
Quote:
And Stamkos’ hometown Maple Leafs, due to a 53.53 per cent combined federal/provincial tax rate, would have to offer him $12.37 million annually over seven years to net the same as he’d make over eight years at $8.5 million in Tampa, according to national sports tax guru Robert Raiola, the director of the Sports and Entertainment group at PKF O’Connor Davis, who has professional sports clients throughout the country.
|
Even if Toronto could have offered him an eight year contract it would have had to been nearly 11M before he ended up with the same take home pay.

You sure? The CEO of Canadian Tire was there at the Toronto pitch apparently. Guy had a big dowry

How do you know that?
Here's what I know: he was a UFA and he chose to sign with Tampa for $8.5M per year AAV.
Saying he waived his UFA status is just wrong.
