Doesn't that amount to the same thing though? If they are below the cap they don't need as much relief.

I wonder - is it cap circumvention to let Smid retire and hire him at the same salary in a scouting or coaching capacity?

Funny how quick you guys are to attack me but ignore these other comments who see this as very good news for the organization.

I think it was expected and definitely the right move, not for his career but for his health.

These scouting duties. I hope it leads to a promising career after hockey, be it with the Flames or not. It must suck to leave the game this way but to be still around it in some capacity would be nice.

Good luck to you Smid.

Man, I wonder why people don't give you the benefit of the doubt.

I wonder what could've caused this.

It's really too bad for Smid. Guy is a heart and soul player who will do anything for his teammates. It sounds like his playing career is over but I hope he has an administrative future with an organization down the road. Sounds like he may have his foot in the door with this scouting gig. Best of luck Ladislav.

Possible you see Bennett and Shinkaruk sent to the minors to start the season to help get the team below the cap since there aren't a ton of options to send down without needing waivers.

Your lack of commitment to transparency is alarming and, frankly, quite pitiful.
I wonder how Jonny would react to a "booster" of his getting excited about a teammate being told his career is probably over, due to injury.
I suspect it would be the antithesis of your reaction.

Shame his career ends this way as the guy really was a warrior and it's not very often you can say that about any ex-Oiler. On the bright side he may be getting a scouting audition so it's possible he can continue to have a career in the NHL.

The Smid injury kind of hits me a bit close to home, in addition to my own sports-related injuries (for which I was not at all compensated) I've seen too much of this kind of thing.

I didnt even want him to re-hab it and come back last season, but he did and then he took that one, fairly soft looking shot, and thats it. Thats his career.

The guy is 30 years old but we're not talking about a sprained ankle we're talking about the thing that keeps his head safely connected to his shoulders.

But I really understand the pressure these guys are under to maximize their earning potential during their careers.

So yeah, I'm really happy to hear this news. The guy still gets paid and hes not risking very, very serious injury that will have consequences for the rest of his life.

Teams can usually get pretty close by shuttling guys up and down from the AHL to get as close to the cap as possible, but that's not always enough to get there.
So if I am reading that correctly, the Flames don't want to put him on LTIR until Gaudreau is signed. Because if they do it before he is signed, and they are no where near the cap, then there would be no benefit to the LTIR.

Is that correct?

https://www.capfriendly.com/ltir-faq

I tried to quote it but the formatting was screwed.

But I think you can only get relief if you are within 3.5 million of the cap (or whatever Smid's hit is).

They have to be cap compliant at the end of camp before LTIR kicks in, and it doesn't matter before the games start.

It could be they can't sign gaudreau until the seasons starts and smid is already on LTIR. Unless they can fit both contracts under the cap or find a way to be below the cap on paper opening day.

I think.
