Ladislav Smid (neck) is not playing this year. Not making the decision to retire, but LTIR a possibility

Looks like he'll end up on LTIR and save the Flames some cap money, like we all were expecting. Sad to see him go down like this.

Well that 600,000 cap penalty doesn't matter now.

Dang that sucks for Laddy. Hope for all the best for him, I can imagine that would be an awful way to go out.

Nice to finally get some news on this front.
What are the implications between choosing IR and retirement?

I'm guessing we'll be able to trade this cap hit to some cheap team that doesn't want to actually make the salary floor

So what upside is there for him if he retires vs IR?
Retires: gets $0; does not play
LTIR: gets $4m; does not play
Seems like a pretty obvious choice...

He'll join the club of players like Pronger, Savard, Horton etc. Who are really retired but not officially retired. Chris Pronger is even in the hall of fame despite not being "retired"

This sucks. Always like Smid, even when he was an Oiler.

I don't get it, he can be placed on permanent injured reserve but still take cap hit? What's Prongers cap hit then?

That sucks for Smiddy. The silver lining though is that he'll still get his money. Of course, a hockey player wants to play though.
If there's a gold lining here, I hope ol Nakladal gets an offer now from the Flames. He's not worse that Smid IMO.

As I understand it, players on LTIR still have their AAV apply to the CAP. They don't come off the CAP. The team just gets to exceed the CAP by the amount of AAV for the player that is on LTIR. It's a little more complicated than that, but that is the quick version.

Expected, but still tough to see a good guy like Smid likely have played his final game.
On the flip side, hope we see a Nak/Russell offer now.

Taking a while to get to 5000

Unfortunate for him to be sure, but I expect now if we were going to sign Russell, it will happen in short order. So we'll see how true these rumors are.

Yep, no reason to give up that sweet crinkle.
The only reason to retire would be if another employment opportunity within hockey came up that he wanted to pursue. Nothing would probably pay him that much in one year, but if it was a good opportunity with long term earning potential, he might take it. Teams do this all the time (player retires and takes job a "scout", and get paid more salary but stretched over a longer period of time).

That's too bad. Smid is a good guy and it's a shame he suffered such a disabling injury. But at least he's got his life

Terrible news for Smid. Must be tough to not be able to play the game you love, and must be tough to worry about a serious neck injury as well. Hope he recovers fully with this full year off, and at the very least doesn't have any lingering issues for the rest of his life, in the NHL or otherwise.
