Over 50% of comercial vehicles fail inspection

In the past couple of years, Moriarity says the number of vehicles that fail has doubled from about 30 to 60 per cent, as drivers scramble to make money in a worsening recession.

WTF? Maybe try increasing the fines? I can't believe it is this high.

Maybe try relaxing the standards/restrictions? Obviously they are too high if so many vehicles are both non-compliant, and able to deliver cargo without failing willy nilly.

Increasing the fines will only cause funds to go towards paying fines rather than the required maintenance.

They are probably being nitpicky like making sure that brakes work and loads are secured.

So to improve the situation, redefine the problem. What could go wrong?

I'd like to see the breakdown of causes for failures - how many of them were simple fixes that could be taken care of right away?

For example, a few years ago, I only had two straps on a load that technically needed three, and I put another one on and drove on - does that count as a fail?

When I took the CVIP course the instructor was an ex RCMP who did commercial inspection. He said proudly that there wasn't a commercial vehicle on the road that he couldn't find some fault with if he really looked.

He was arguing in favour of meticulous inspections and logs so that the officer wouldn't have any reason to look.

Loads have to be secured? If you frequent Sarcee Trail near the Spy Hill landfill you could be forgiven for not knowing the city does inspections on trucks hauling around waste, gravel, rocks, etc. The surrounding roads at Beacon Hill mall always look like a gravel truck dropped its load all over the road.

I didn't (at the time) know that it needed three. Anything longer than 10 feet (I think) needs three straps.

Puckedoff- do you have some examples of things that could be relaxed?

I know for passenger cars a crack on the windshield will be a fail- even if the crack doesn't fall within the driver's view. I could see a trucker being mad about getting a $500 ticket for failing to fix a $400 windshield. (not knowing the numbers.)

I used to drive a truck Calgary to Edmonton most weeks when I was younger. The Leduc scale is ridiculous. They said that my brake pressure was dropping too low before 'dynamiting' and sent me back into Edmonton for repairs. I stayed overnight, went to the dealer, they said everything was fine and sent me on my way. Leduc scale refused and sent me back. Dealer sends me with a photocopy of the spec manual page and a letter showing that everything was within tolerances. Ahole at the scale grumbles, says he will let it go and then asks for my logs so he can try to find something else. Another time the scale at Balzac sent me back to Calgary, in the daytime, for having a marker light burnt out. Another time I was driving a 2 month old truck with a couple of thousand KM on it but they still insisted on doing a full inspection. They can be pretty damn nitpicky at times.

My dad had to do a bunch of repairs for a dump truck company cause all of the frames and beds were cracked and worped the guy bought the company and started ignoring all the repairs.So dot took 15 dump trucks off the road the guys entire fleet.
