Default Is the US World Cup flop good for the Flames?

I've read several calls for a regime change at USA Hockey today after the US team's poor performance at the World Cup. For example:

http://sports.yahoo.com/news/burn-do...071352744.html

Management and coaching are taking most of the flak and the Flames own Brian Burke is one of the names coming under heavy criticism. Essentially saying his 'old school' philosophies mainly regarding 'grit' and 'truculence' and 'blue-collar' have little to do with building winning teams in the current age.

While not a devotee of advanced stats I do agree with the basic principles such as 'possessing the puck more than the opposition leads to more wins'. While I believe both that Treliving is on board with this and that it is his team I feel there is no way Burke doesn't have influence in the team's direction. I can't figure out how much though. Is he just a media whore? Is he a clever misdirection the Flames use in the press? Is he having significant say in the team makeup?

So do we want Burke to take a solid bashing over his role in this Team USA performance in order to hopefully minimize his influence of the Flames on-ice product? Or do we think that last year would have gone better if "Bollig played more"?

I see now there has been some discussion of this in the 'Phil Kessel tweet' thread. I should have read that first.

Still I think this merits its own thread. Part of me actually wants Burke gone. Not because I don't like him but I have this fear that he may be the weak link in our chance to build a powerhouse team. I worry that he going to "Baertschi" some good young prospect with nasty public comments or insist on future Bolligs and Engelllands on the team.

This is very good news for the Flames, Burke is an idiot, who got lucky with the Ducks and won a cup. He is going to say something stupid about a prospect and he may lose the dam prospect, get this idiot away from the team.

In fairness, Team Canada has a lot of offence, but they are almost all good 200 foot players as well. You can't say that about Kessel. So while I think he should have been named, it's not like just adding him or a couple other snubs makes any difference to the result.

Here at home it's not like they've gone after face punchers. Treliving started out by signing the likes of Raymond and Setoguchi. He signed Bollig who, while supposedly a tough guy, was also supposed to be on the cusp of some offensive output. He signed Frolik, Nakladal, Prybl, who are not belligerant, Brouwer who is big and strong but has offence. They've drafted the BPA in the first round and mixed it up a fair bit after that.

I just don't think there's any evidence that Burke is trying to turn the team nito the Broad Street Bullies. Is he blunt with criticism? He can be. But let's face it - he was pretty right about Sven. Frankly I don't see the same comments having the same effect on a Monahan or Bennett. If Burke said something critical about them, they'd address it, and not pout.

Do you honestly think Burke is still a good hockey mind?
It's pretty clear that Treliving deserves most of the credit for the Flames recent successes. I know Burke hired Treliving, but that's pretty much it in terms of good Burkie moves.

I don't think Burke has much influence on the direction BT takes with this team. Not even sure what influence he had with Team USA. Wasn't Lombardi the GM?

O.K. there has been a lot of talk on whether or not MacTavish has actually done a good job for us, most fans on this board are very basic in their analysis and I feel would change their opinion entirely if the team was successful.

Burke LOVES Kessel and you honestly think he'd be the one to hold him off Team USA?

0% chance that happened. Burke has too much pride in players he's drafted or traded for.

Didn't he trash Bobby Ryan as low intensity for the Sochi olympics?

lol. This team was the laughing stock of the entire league before Burke got here. Basically lost every trade with the exception of a couple from 2010-2013.

Flames have a great reputation league wide over the past few years thanks to Burke and his very smart hire of Trelivig as GM. It is pretty clear Treliving is calling the shots here which shows Burke is letting him do his job properly.

Aww yeah this is how we do it right here. Treliving gets the credit, Burke gets the blame. It's a perfect system! Good cop bad cop and the bad cop gets to be bad solely because he exists. When will Burke stop running this organisation into the ground with his predilection for truculence? WHEN LORD WHEN?

Haha, yeah... someone still thinks that Sven was great but just too beautiful for this world. We definitely want a player around who pouts after a comment!

Baertschi was unmotivated and not good. Regardless of what he does with the Canucks, Baertschi was a 22 year old with 25 points in the NHL and thought he was too good to have to earn his spot when Burke made his comments. In retrospect it was probably a last ditch effort to motivate the wayward prospect.

The mistake with Baertschi was holding onto him too long, not running him out of town.

Bobby Ryan is low intensity. Have you ever watched him play?

He's the Bouwmeester of forwards. He should be so much more than he is.

I'm surprised that people fully buy into the public show that Burke puts on when it comes to stuff like Truculence and advanced stats.

We're talking about burke doing the job that ken king used to do, and yeah i think his mind works well in that capacity.

burke's hockey mind functioned clearly enough to hire treliving and leave him to his job.

I want to believe that there's a reason I have to sit through Burke's advanced stats lamppost drunk joke every STH event, year after year. but what is it? is he trying to hide how savvy the Flames actually are behind the scenes? I sure hope so.

Do we even have one "truculent" player? We are one of the softest teams in the league.
