Based on that tweet, I'm guessing he wasn't invited?

No, he wasn't named to the roster, even before he was injured.

Yes, only the top 2 in each group will go on and Canada and Europe have already clinched with two wins each.

Thats a pretty scathing indictment of USA hockey.

The tournament format screwed USA as well.

2 or 3 of their players, one of which is a game breaker, are playing for another team.

But yeah, Tortorella? like are you serious?

It's not like Tortorella scratched him, the GM didn't invite him.

Kessel was obviously willing and able to play and wasnt selected and thats ridiculous.

I get that the USA wanted to go with an 'Identity' but you cant tell me that they took Kane for his 'rough and tumble attitude,' they took him to put pucks in nets.

Torts' 'tough guy' identity is ridiculous. Its bad and he should feel bad.

the funny thing is about that quote, the US already tried and failed this approach at Sochi. Burke argued it was built as a toolbox team, but not the most talented. So,they got their ass whooped and what do they do at the next best on best tourney...? Go all in on grit over talent.

Maybe. I know it's tantalizing to see this and wonder about the whole "surround your talent with beef" philosophy that the Flames evidently employ.

But the issue with USA is, and arguably with the Flames is, you only have so much elite talent. Do you take more "skilled" players who are less skilled than Canada's 3rd and 4th lines, or do you try to take some sandpaper guys?

Guys that Canada is sticking on their 3rd and 4th lines are as skilled as anybody the USA has save maybe Kane. So you can't out-skill Canada. Furthermore, most guys on Canada are also pretty big and are, if not gritty, at least hard to push off the puck. So you can't really outhit or outmuscle them either.

So do you take skilled 25-25-50 guys, or do you take grittier 15-20-30 guys like Abdelkader? The problem is you're pretty much damned if you do, damned if you don't. Canada is just waaay too deep.

I think too much is being made over this strategy. You might as well try something.

(None of this excuses not having Kessel on your team. That was sheer stupidity.)

Yeah, but they lost to Europe too. Canada is the favorite, but you have to get to the finals first.

Really...you have to start by getting out of the group stage.

USA just pulled an 'England.'

It's a short tournament, not a seven game series. Bring the best team you possibly can, get a guy who has respect and is respected to coach them.

Clearly, a team like the US has to try to build a team that can beat Canada. The trouble is, whatever aspect you emphasize when putting together your team, Canada's players are still better than you in that aspect.

Every line of Canada's is great at offense, defense, possession, has some grit, size, and are proven high pressure players.

It's tough to beat a team that, even if they didn't take the "best" players, simply doesn't have any weaknesses.

The US lost their first game, it happens. Anything can happen in one game. Then, they were beaten by a better Canadian team.

It's a very short tournament, so it isn't surprising that a good team is eliminated earlier than expected. It's very likely that at least one will. Either Russia or the pretty good looking NA team (or perhaps Sweden) will be another good team to not qualify for the semis.
