Wait, I know, tax the whole city equally to pay for the things you need, that's a good plan. Because I chose to live downtown to avoid the very things you are complaining about I need to be penalized in order to support your lifestyle anyway. Take my taxes to build your school and while you're at it, tear down the police station in my district so you can make it the new Airdrie HQ... I don't mind when the park down the street from me gets overrun with drug dealers and prostitutes, really. The cops really need to be patrolling the suburbs to keep those speeding teenagers in line.

haha and then you turn around and complain about your taxes because you live downtown! hahaha!!

Was it a guy with a nervous tick, sort of scruffy-looking? Probably the same guy who came to my door wanting toonies because his daughter's dog was injured and he needed to get up to the vet clinic; he claimed to work at cheesecake cafe and said he came to see his boss who lived somewhere in the area but he wasn't home...

This guy paid me a visit too back during Stampede. I knew it was a crock but his story was so entertaining it was worth two bucks. He's a very good actor.

Calgary Transit already has the highest per capita transit usage in North America with more than 200,000 riders per day. Also, believe it or not, it's actually not a bad system comparatively speaking because it was built to handle the 1988 Olympics and has since been upgraded. Go to Montreal where the last expansion was in the 60s....

They know there are issues and are working on them... they get fixed faster if people would STFU about the roads. You'll notice there are more trains running more often during peak times already, that's the first step. Making each platform hold 4 cars will be the next step.

So I plead with all you drivers out there to shut up about the damn roads for a couple years while transit catches up!

Back on topic, I think it's pretty. It's unique in both shape and colour, and will certainly add to downtown. Only disappointment is that it will block the view of the Calgary Tower from the North and North East.

THe view from the Calgary Tower is going to get a lot more obscured in a northerly direction. I don't think you'll be able to see the airport anymore. A small price to pay I guess, but I'd love to see it's length raised somehow.

It's not about how many trains and buses, it's about where they go or more important where they don't go. The transit system in this city is a big joke, especially the c-train.

Why is that?

They are filled to capacity now - why would they need to go someplace different?

It would be great if there were more lines to other areas. But the fact is the lines they have are already packed.

Where do you think new lines could be run that would reduce current crowding, and NOT result in more traffic?

That is exactly the reason they need to build new lines. When current ones are packed it means that they need to do something bigger than running trains every two minutes in rush hour to alleviate the pressure (that is only going to get worse BTW).

Check out the 20 year capital plan and you can see plans to develop two new lines. One straight west of downtown and one to the SE (which should eventually go to MacKenzie town and beyond).

But enough about CT, there is another thread about the expansion plans somewhere else. The tower looks great, we need the Oil companies to start investing in some infrastructure instead of just renting our current towers. That way something is left behind if they pack up and go.

Now all the architectural geeks here can start speculating what and when Imperial will build their new HQ to be. Of course, knowing IOL, it'll be a big monolithic box that doesn't stray too far from conventional design...

I hadn't seen that plan - I believe it is more recent than some of the others I've seen posted here (unless I missed them). The new SE line may take some riders off the South leg, but it won't help the NW or NE legs which are already packed.
Interesting, the plan says it was revised Dec. 2005, yet it says "Calgary is the dominant municipality with a population of 956,000 people". Uh, we passed 1 Million. Would a 20 year plan that is only 10 months old already be out of date?

This is the lamest argument that comes up all the time on this board.

Did you know that your neighbourhood used to be on the edge of the city? What a dumbass decision by you. I feel so bad for all the people who's taxes had to build your infrastructure.


You pay more tax because your property is worth more. Just like people who make more money pay more tax as well. Our governments philosophy is to tax the rich at a higher rate than they tax the poor. If you don't want high property taxes, go move into a $100,000 refrigerator box in forest lawn.

Just as you put down people for complaining about transit when they chose to live on the edge of the city, I put you down for whining about taxes when you chose to live in the inner city.

The biggest problem for the C-train is going to be 7th ave. It can barely handle the level of traffic it gets now. Throwing more trains and more lines into that bottleneck will not help.

Are you saying that our transit is superior to Montreal's?

Now, I will admit I've never been to any of the suburbs, but on the island the Metro is amazing. You don't need a car at all if you live down there. No matter where you need to go a Metro stop won't be very far away, and they come very regularly.

Yes I am. Because of the suburbs. I have a friend in Montreal and it takes her over 2 hours to get downtown....
