I think Vegas will introduce a lot of people to the game of hockey. You get free tickets and why not, they'll go check it out.

It's a very good question, one often forgotten about when arguing about the sustainability of markets, all people want to do is look at attendance figures.

That said, I doubt this early into the game that there was any significant slashing of ticket prices just to sell them. No need to cut prices this early on, so I would suspect they are getting a pretty decent average ticket price on that STH base.

In a league where 40% of the revenue is brought in by 7 teams, I have a hard time seeing how LV will even have average ticket prices.

It's a long term strategy for the league, but I suspect LV might actually help lower the 17/18 salary cap. A lot depends on the exchange rate though.

Average to what? The league, the 7 Canadian teams, or the average American teams? Getback just posted the ticket prices, as stated in that post, they look pretty on par with the rest of the league based south of the boarder.

The overall average which is really skewed by the top 10 or so markets

They'll be pretty close would be my guess. But regardless what's your point, it's not a success unless they can hit Canadian market ticket prices?

That it is an interesting investment for the NHL. At best they will probably be average, but LV could also feasibly drag the average revenue down if they aren't. There are some things worth considering after the new car smell fades way. What if the NFL/MLB/NBA moves move to town? What if the team is another 'Columbus' in terms of on-ice success? How will the fans respond once it starts to set in that a playoff run can be a 'once in a generation' type of event? There's a bit of risk going to Vegas. It's a non-traditional market with a ton of other stuff for people to do. What qualifies as success in Vegas? Survival? Or do they think LV can develop into a better market than Quebec City or Hamilton?

The NHL must really believe in the market long term because a team in QC, for instance, would be a safer bet for early and long term term success IMO. There is also no chance at a 'Phoenix scenario' in QC. No other big league sport is coming to town. The fans will buy tickets no matter what, assuming trends that exist in the other Canadian markets extend to QC. Lack of success in Canada means nothing theses days, even crap teams sell out up here.

I guess my point is: Usually you bet on 'risky' when the payoff is better. I'm not condemning the NHL or anything, but I am interested to see how this fares. Personally, I'm betting on LV eventually settling into bottom 5/10 market territory. Possibly worse if one of the big 3 comes to town at some point.

Depends on who their base is I suppose, the local folks might have a tough time affording it but the tourists and casinos probably won't blink at the prices. Going to see a game should be on par or cheaper than the more popular shows, UFC, etc. Even then, upper seats at $40-$60 is pretty affordable for the non-tourists.

I would be surprised if more than a thousand of those seats were bought by the ham and egger hockey fan,most were likely scooped up by casinos,large corporations and other hospitality entities...

Actually the first 13000 were NOT casinos as they wanted to show that they could have a base without the casinos backing.

Probably, but I think you could argue that 2/3rds of the teams in the league have fickle fanbases.

You'd be better to buy that, fly down for the Flames games and sell the rest than get one pair of game tickets here.

That seems like a pretty high ratio.

Looks like I'll be buying all of my Las Vegas tickets on the secondary market.
