Wouldn't any job in Canada be better than the same job in a war torn country?

For the most part, school itself, as currently organized, is mainly a waste of time for students and teachers.

Extremely rigid, regimented, and not really stimulating. Teachers can't teach how they want, and students basically are pylons sitting in a classroom.

The education system frustrates teachers. Not the job itself.

I don't know any teachers and have never been directly exposed to the daily grind of teaching.

However, I have 3 kids. They have to deal with, say, 25 homeroom kids. Based on that, I conclude teachers have a difficult job.

You don't have to go to war torn countries for a comparison where Canadian teachers come out more fortunate. Canadian teachers are paid better than almost any other in the world, with teachers in Alberta and Ontario paid dramatically more than teachers in places like England, the U.S., and France.

It won't last much longer, though. Teacher pay and retirement benefits are a house of cards that's going to crash under the weigh of retired boomers and shakey public finances. Same with police. If my kids decide to go into those fields, there's no chance they'll enjoy the same pay, benefits, and early retirement that people in those fields have enjoyed in Canada over the last 30 years. Those jobs will likely be closer to what they were in Canada back in the mid-20th century (and what they are in most of the world today), when teachers earned a livelihood comparable to bank tellers and police lived in blue-collar neighbourhoods alongside roofers and carpenters.

You are saying that we will soon have to bribe the likes of police and teachers to get out of trouble here in Canada?

Police forces are going to be chopped in half in about 10 years when self driving cars become the norm.

I get it, teachers have an important job. The are shaping the minds of our future leaders, yada, yada yada.

But every teacher I know, seems to be incredibly happy, has a great lifestyle, and very little work related stress. Yet you read some of these articles and you'd think they're fighting hand to hand with Isis in the bowels of Aleppo.

There are so many people out there that have far more challenging, emotionally draining, and just as impactful jobs. I don't hear Firefighters, Paramedics and Police Officers moaning that society doesn't appreciate them much, or that they have horrible working conditions. Most of them do their jobs quietly, and honorably, and keep the stress to themselves. And they see absolutely horrible things, and work absolutely horrible hours.

Roughnecks, Nurses, ER doctors, construction workers, heavy duty mechanics.... some of these guys and gals work 12-14 hour days regularily, and just do it. I don't understand the 'Woe is me. Appreciate me. I'm so special.' thing that some teachers seem to want. Maybe it's the type of person that field attracts?

You chose this career path, if it's so incredibly difficult, and the work conditions so abhorent, maybe find a new path. You have a great education, and great credentials... so why not? Or maybe, just maybe, is there a ton of perks you DON'T want to give up? Or maybe, is it because you pretty much have to commit a federal crime to be fired?

I'm not painting them all with the same brush, as I'm sure the brainwashing and propoganda of the union comes into play. But it seems there is this constant, never good enough attitude with a lot of them.

I would like to point out that this article was written for a teacher-focused website, and - while the style of it as an 'open letter to spouses' is overwrought, it's pretty clear the main focus of it is to provide support to other teachers.

I don't really know of any teachers who are the first ones to start whining about our jobs, or exclaiming that we're somehow special, but we don't work any less hard than anyone else. Yet, there is this thread specifically dedicated to whether or not teachers do, in fact, work hard... started by and mostly participated in by non-teachers.

There are no other professions (other than professional athlete) who get that treatment on this board. I mean, I can sum-up an Engineering degree in three sentences, but I'm not about to start crapping on the profession, or implying they aren't well compensated, or don't have unique stresses and pressures needing support from people who understand.

Basically, what I'm saying is, teachers like to whine about our lot to other teachers so when we do that on teacher-centric websites, don't get all bent out of shape about it.

I think the layoffs in the oil patch thread rips office oil and gas workers pretty good some days. Apparently we all are lazy and overpaid who drink all day and cash bonus checks who got what we deserve

To be fair, I'm not saying it's all teachers. I'm not. I think they are properly compensated in this province for what they do. More places should follow suit.

I just think not a lot of them have done jobs that are far more difficult and stressful my a massive factor, and don't have proper context. One of my friends sons a corrections officer in a max security prison. You want to talk about a tough crowd to work with.... He refuses to talk about his job, he's just seen so many terrible things. But he'll never, ever woe is me to anyone, not even his spouse. He knew what he was signing up for.

Whether you are complaining on a techer'centric website, or out in the open. It's still complaining, and still looking for more recognition. If that woman titled the article correctly, it should read. "I don't think you realize how important what I do is, and how special I really am."

I get it, you have an influencial job and I admire you for it. Do I need to tell you ever time I see you? Do you need that much attention?
