I know two people who left teaching to become police officers in Vancouver.

The reason? Better pay, better hours, less stress.

Bull. There was only one reason: The Gun.

In a previous role, I worked with a lot of retired police officers. It actually sounds like a bit of an easy gig these days. Depends on what you do, obviously.

Cops dont spend their entire careers walking a beat in the hood cracking skulls and running down hoodlums, we watch too many Cop movies.

They eventually get transitioned to other departments, they get given a whistle, a car, a desk or a dog.

Its not like they're given a 5 block stretch of City that they're personally responsible for until they either die or retire regardless of whether or not the City or the World turns into a Dystopian wasteland.

I think this is a very important point. Look at the uproar caused by this one article, in which she says many of her hours are voluntary, and that she does it because she loves it. The reaction is three pages of people saying, "You don't work hard! Look at how hard I work!"

Its no wonder teachers get a bit defensive.

Because she's good at it. She has always worked in the caring field - when we met she was working with disabled kids.

She doesn't complain either, besides the normal after-work venting most of us do. I'm the one trying to get her to re-train and transition to a new field. But that's tough to do when you're raising young kids.

And of course, the opportunity to give Canucks fans a legal beat-down. Who wouldn't take that opportunity?

No, the reaction is "you are very well compensated, you don't work harder or have it more stressful than the rest of us, stop thinking you are special."

This thread title should be changed to "Who works the hardest?".

It's just a d###-measuring contest at this point.

I went to highschool with one of the guys who transitioned from teacher to cop, so I know him pretty well. Sitting in my my apartment one day after I had finished teaching I asked him why he wanted to be a cop of all things.

His answer was really simple, "Cops get overtime."

Teachers work way harder than I do. Probably way harder than most of the CP regulars do. But then I'm projecting. Maybe the thousands of hours spent browsing CP (not to mention all your other sites) are on your own time, and you all actually work at night.

And I make way more than them. Suckers!!

Actually...no. Rather:

This is it. Teachers are not special. No matter how hard they try to make it seem as though they should be.

Teaching must be harder than the vast majority of white-collar work.

In my opinion, teachers in Canada have it pretty easy, compared to being a teacher in war torn countries, or in places where education is deemed to be evil.

At the very least, teachers here probably won't get threats or beaten up by angry parents because their children received a bad grade!

The point on the other side of the argument is that there are very few of them who are claiming to be special. This cyclical argument goes on because of comments like these that make sweeping generalizations that all teachers claim to be special. Would you not get defensive if someone made that claim about your industry?

Most teachers I know work hard. Most teachers I know are happy with their job and all of the pros and cons that go along with it.

The entire reason that blog post was put into this thread was implying that teachers work harder than you, have emotional stresses that no other job has, and have so many voluntary hours that no other job has, has bad days which implicitly justifies some bad actions against her spouse and all that.

The fact that it was posted into this thread, and the context surrounding it, is exactly this sweeping generalization.

I guess my teachers back in the day gave me a really good eye for reading between the lines.
