I have little to no sympathy here. I can understand that teaching can be frustrating, but at the same time your take-home results are the same if you pour your heart and soul into it 110% or if you mail it in.

This article reads more like a special little snowflake wanting admiration and respect for their brutal sacrifice and it shows a glaring lack of perspective and understanding for the rest of life in general.

Well, "tips", I ran my own businesses for 18 years. I know exactly what it's like. My wife is also an educator. So, I get the ole double whammy.
But thanks for your input.

It just makes me sad. That's all. The kind of sad that hurts.

On the topic of work hours.

People should work less and enjoy life. The concept of "working hard" is fine if that's what you enjoy doing, but there should be more to life than working full time to make end's meet. I realize everyone needs to make a living, but in some countries a smaller work week and less hours in the day is proven to increase productivity. On a personal level, when I moved into the house to work I got way more done in 5 hours than I did at the office doing 8.5.

On teachers. I have a lot of respect for teachers. It requires a degree, a patient mindset and the willingness to pay your dues in order to get a foot in the door to land a full time position. Teaching is a profession, and IMO, teachers should be paid well for what they do. They play a significant role in shaping our children's minds for the future and should be positive role models. My son's teachers are typically at school working an hour or two past the bell. Summer's off is great.

On this note though, is there a single other profession that puts so much emphasis on convincing people that they 'work hard?'

"Aw crap, they saw us having our PD day at the beach again...why did they have to show up right at Volleyball finals? Alert the Union!"

Its like teachers are always trying to convince people that they spend their days slaving away under the brutal gaze of their abusive masters.

The teachers doth protest too much, methinks.

Sounds like a whole bunch of whining TBQH. I've always held the stance that teaching has it's challenges, just like any other job. It's no less easier or harder than other jobs. They shouldn't act like they're overworked compared to the rest of us.

I have never heard more professional whining than from accountants at tax time.

There is some truth to that, but it might be a bit of a chicken and the egg scenario. Is it because there is constant moaning outside the profession about working 9-3, vacation days and PD days at the beach?

Exactly! The teachers' whining is amateur hour, they're nowhere near the pros.

That being said, take a teacher's entire year and then make them do it in 10 weeks.

You'd definitely find some innovative teaching techniques.

"Learn damn you!!"

You have no idea how hard it is to not get a bad back sitting on your ass being on CP all day.

My wife works with people transitioning off workers compensation. Every day she meets with clients who are angry or depressed. She deals with people desperate to find new training and employment after suffering devastating injuries. She also deals with incorrigible loafers and scammers. Most are uneducated men. Some swear at her. Some hit on her. Her office has hostage-taking and suicide protocols.

Most teachers wouldn't last a month doing her job. She makes 20k a year less than teachers in this province, works 48 weeks a year, and has no company pension. She'll likely have to work until she's 65.

Teachers who moan about how hard they have it aren't doing themselves any favours when it comes to public perceptions about the job.

Come to think of it, my lower back is quite sore right now.

I can't fathom how teaching compares emotionally with medicine, firefighting, policing. I don't hear of many teachers suffering from PTSD from what they saw on the job.

Yeah, why don't we unionize everyone in the province and pay them 80-100k a year. Give them 10 weeks a year off, guaranteed pensions, and early retirement while we're at it. I'm sure we can find the money somewhere. Maybe raise energy royalties.

Are you taking notes, Rachel?

This can only be facilitated through further TFW's.

Maybe, and I'm going out on a limb here, much like teachers she finds the job in some ways fulfilling?
