I'm no expert on this, but I know they have to include Smid in the cap number to start the season, then they are allowed to go over the cap up to his salary amount to replace him.
I don't think they can have both on the roster at camp without moving a body out, which I'm guessing they are having a tough time doing.
I don't know the rules so you are probably right. That said it still makes no sense for Russell's camp to wait on this. What happens if Wotherspoon or another young D prospect has the camp of his life and flames then feel they don't need Russell? Also Russell missing camp with a new coaching system would be a horrible way to start the season.
Like i said in another post " I don't believe this rumour".

I wonder if they bring Russell in on a PTO and then sign him on the opening night of the season?

I think they can place a player on LTIR at the same time they have to become cap compliant. There is no way Philly or Boston would have been cap compliant opening night in recent years otherwise
“Kris Russell, I hear, has got some interest out there and that he’s probably getting close to make a decision in the next few days. He’s a Western guy. I think in a perfect world he would stay out West, but right now he’s kind of got to wait. I wouldn’t be surprised at all if maybe he wants to go back to Calgary. Calgary has got a really crowded blueline. Unless they can do something there with one of their existing contracts, I’m not sure there’s room. But I think you’ll hear Russell signing probably within the next few days.”

@DarrenDreger theorizing on #Leafs Lunch that TOR could be interested in UFA Kris Russell on a 1 yr deal, that they could flip at the deadline

Pure radio fodder. However, Russell is in serious discussions with 8 teams and is expected to sign before camp.

I wouldn't be surprised if he signs a one year deal with a club that can fit in $3 million in hopes of signing with the Flames next offseason when Wideman and a few other blue liners will be off the books.

It's humorous that even Dreger himself calls himself out as being a mouth piece.

God love him, I think he just really wants to be a Calgary Flame and that's it. I think he's patiently waiting for Treliving to get his business done so he can play here. It may be to his detriment financially but I just think that this is where his heart is.

Ya I hope this isn't the case but the longer it draws out it makes it seam as though he's waiting to see if the Flames have any dough left over from the Gaudreau extension. Crazy bugger.
If he signs one year somewhere I'd take him here next season when Egg McMuffin and Wideman are off the books. I think he's a character guy and has shown to be clutch late in games (a number of times leading up to and during the '15 playoff run). That ability alone is worth having him on the 3rd pairing, where he can be sheltered. Just no room going into this year.

Okay, I understand that I'm not always hip with the cool kids and their wacky nicknames but...who or what is Egg McMuffin?

If you thought this season would have a happy ending, you haven't been paying attention.
From the newspaper reports I have read it sounds like he is still Calgary and actually skating with some of the boys at WinSport. Usually players around this time are in their actual NHL cities to start camp so it does appear he hasn't really found a home contrary to rumors about all these "pending deals" that were in the works with several teams.
I am OK with bringing him back for a 2-3 year contract at a respectable AAV but the longer this drags out with no NHL interest, the stranger it becomes. If I was an NHL agent I would be advising some players that straight NHL employment and team friendly contracts are the way to go. There have been many players who were NHL regulars last season and in 14-15 who have not found ANY teams to take them. Glencross, Jones, Russell, Matt Bartowski, Jaret Stoll (PTO Columbus) and many more.
I can't recall a time when so many players who clearly have been regulars in the league , can't find employment. What is even more shocking is how many of them have Flames connections!

This is noble, but Kris Russell can't be on this team. Would I rather have him than Wideman? Barely.
Hamilton's possession numbers with and without Russell go from terribad to bordering on elite.
He doesn't really QB a powerplay, and as great as he is using shotblocking to overcome a deficiency in size, I don't want someone who's that physically inferior killing penalties either. On a defense that already includes Gio, Brodie, Dougie, and Wideman, with Andersson and Kylington in the AHL, what does Kris Russell bring that the Flames defense does not already possess?

The only McDonald's reference in relation to the Flames I can remember is Olli Jokinen and his Big McMeal from Mack Donald's.
I got a good laugh with Olli in that video. He had some great lines when speaking to the media and I recall him saying Niklas Hagman's trade to Anaheim was good for him, all he was doing in Calgary was eating popcorn in the press box.
I still recall how excited I was when we got him in 2009 and how quickly he contributed and after that he career in a Flames uniform was so so. I searched him just now and found this interesting article on what he is doing these days.
