There were rumors that the third jerseys this year would be the retro ones.

We've had to be using a our current home/away jerseys longer than any current jersey in the league.
Time for a change.

The rumor that the 3rds were discontinued...the new stickers on the helmets...this ticket package. Might be smoke, might not be, but at least we aren't talking about contracts.
My guess? Maybe.

Montreal, Chicago, and Detroit have the Flames beat by a few decades.

I know they've painted banners around one of the VIP bars in the Dome also in the retro colours

I agree, the current jerseys have been overdone and are rather boring (a black flaming "C" like come on!). The thing that bothers me most is the shoulder crests. When they had the horse head there, they weren't that bad but I am not a fan of the flags being there.
They either need to go retro or come up with something entirely new (and no, I don't mean go with "Calgary" as a wordmark on the front like their current alternates). I am hoping they adopt the retros as an official 3rd at the very least.

Yeah but they go back and forth it seems. The current Flames jersey hasn't been replaced or at all adjusted since 2007.
Teams like Montreal, Detroit, and Boston, although based heavily on their classics, are touched up every now and then. Don't know if that's true with Chicago.

They will hold off until the Adidas switch for a re-design next season.
Guessing we use the ugly flag jerseys with a retro 3rd this season.

Read in to this what you will but I am doing some work for the Flames right now and all the graphics they have sent me are the same style as the current jersey... Black C etc...

The Flames 80s colors aren't retro. They are just good.

This is what I'm thinking. Same ole same ole this year regarding the regulars, just switching the Wal-Mart 3rd with the retro again. Then in 2017-18, I'm expecting retro colours only, for the main ones. They're just getting ready for it ahead of time (I hope)

Yeah I would think the same, as many teams often do this before adopting their alternates as full time jerseys. I think Pittsburgh may have been the most recent team to do so but I know of many other teams over the past that have done the exact same thing.

Except for minor revisions as jersey styles have changed over the years (and things like adding names to the backs of the jerseys in the late 70s), the Habs, Wings, and Hawks haven't made any significant changes to their primary jerseys since the 40s or 50s.
Even if you just go back to the Edge redesign in 2007, the Bruins, Flames, Blackhawks, Avalanche, Blue Jackets, Red Wings, Canadiens, Devils, Rangers, Senators, Canucks, and Capitals are all still wearing the same designs.
