That play by Clinton calling some of Trump's supporters deplorable is actually brilliant as a chess move.
You know that she will get asked about that in the debate. Guaranteed. She will be able to quickly apologize for being overly general about her statement, and then can list off all the disgusting acts and actions that Trump has done including the birther stuff on the biggest stage of all and say this is why she mentioned it in the first place.

Honestly though, if you are not racist and you are voting for Trump, then you are a racist. His policies are transparently racist and if you are willing to have them implemented, then how can you say you are not a racist?

I think it made her look ridiculous. Trump can pull off outrageous. Clinton can't.
And Trump voters have started calling themselves "basket of deplorables".
Criticizing Trump voters (say, by calling them racists), tends to move people into his camp, not out of it. Trump voters have always suspected there has been a minority of self-styled "elites" that are out to get them. All the hand wringing over Trump is doing nothing more than verifying their hunch.
If you are a borderline Trump voter, and don't consider yourself a racist...all of the rhetoric out of the progressives just looks like lies and bullying.

That's a good pretty good statement from Clinton after a clear blunder; effectively, "Trump is the problem here, not the bulk of his supporters"... though it probably would have been more effective if she'd said it herself rather than in a release.

Agreed. This is a moderate "hahaha" for Clinton supporters but it's a full on "I KNEW IT!" for Trump anti-establishment. Clinton took the bait and in doing so toppled a few more trump leaning voters into the highly-motivated-to-vote camp.
Clinton needs to take the headlines away from Trump. It's been months. The longer she waits, the longer Trump keeps hanging around.

Clinton can't really use the birther crap unfortunately, it originated from her supporters.
This wasn't a chess move, it was a mistake. How big it plays is to be determined I guess.

Not that she's wrong, but that's a pretty insincere apology. The words "sorry" or "apology" appear 0 times. This isn't going to end well for her.

Why can't she use the birther issue? Why does it matter some supporters of hers started it?

Because "It was your supporters that started it" is an effective, and true, counter and makes her look bad. She should just stay away from the birther thing. She doesn't need it.

Huge article on Trump's shady/illegal charitable donations.
Quote:
For one thing, nearly all of its money comes from people other than Trump. In tax records, the last gift from Trump was in 2008. Since then, all of the donations have been other people’s money — an arrangement that experts say is almost unheard of for a family foundation.
Trump then takes that money and generally does with it as he pleases. In many cases, he passes it on to other charities, which often are under the impression that it is Trump’s own money.
In two cases, he has used money from his charity to buy himself a gift. In one of those cases — not previously reported — Trump spent $20,000 of money earmarked for charitable purposes to buy a six-foot-tall painting of himself.
Money from the Trump Foundation has also been used for political purposes, which is against the law. The Washington Post reported this month that Trump paid a penalty this year to the Internal Revenue Service for a 2013 donation in which the foundation gave $25,000 to a campaign group affiliated with Florida Attorney General Pamela Bondi (R).

Who said it was an apology? It was a statement.
I do believe it is mostly wrong to insult the public you want to govern. The essence of her statement is mostly correct. But I wish she could say it in a way that doesn't declare all the intolerant people as evil, incurables.
The more eloquent thing to do would have been to state that the country needs to show them that we've grown beyond that way of thinking and we need to work together to educate those people that it is no longer acceptable to be so intolerant of others. Point out that Trump is fueling that line of thinking that sets us back years, and erases all we've gained in terms of tolerance.
