Cause you aren't making an argument? You stated he should have shortened his swing,
1. He missed a FB down the middle. How do you know he wasn't just trying to go the other way.
2. A HR adds 3 runs, a single MAY add 1. Runs scored probability says hitting extra bases increases the total run probability and singles/putting the ball in play actually isn't the best way to score runs. Especially with D and positioning as good as it is.
Basically your argument boils down to : Martin struck out., It would have been better if he got a hit.
While I agree with this 100%, after EVERY strikeout this statement could be made....

God dammit we needed Donaldson to cash in Pillar there. I can't imagine how frustrated he is.

But I am making an argument. And I have used actual numbers to back it up.
With the same lineup, home runs are up 16% over last year. Strike outs are up 20%. That is a pretty clear illustration of their approach at the plate.
Result? Run production is down 12%.
(this is the last thing I will say on this) (promise)

I agree situational hitting has been bad this season. And they are striking out too much.
However, the bigger issue to me is how many BAD pitches they are missing. They get into the proper situation, and miss easy pitches.
Huge Inning for Grilli, let's get an add on run!!

A little off-topic since it's game time, but I really think (once) Bautista leaves, Travis should be his OF replacement. His infield fielding has got to be the worst in either league. His bat has been damn good though. If he can play OF, I'd have little problem with him playing there but 2nd base he is severely lacking and he's going to cost them at multiple points in the playoffs.

If he can't improve his fielding, that might be a great idea.
But he's young - hopefully he can improve the fielding.
Because he would be more valuable as a 2nd baseman

Goins should work with Travis all offseason on his D
But between his and Jose, hits the that side are terrifying!
