Friedman: Gaudreau negotiations will be put on hold during World Cup

Yeah, we're in agreement. Guys like Gaudreau and Bennett are expected to take deals more friendly to the team because they are RFAs we have the rights to
No RFA is looking at the Flames overpaying for a UFA free agent and using that as a comparable.

The best player makes the most money, the days of these slowly escalating RFA contracts until players are like 30 and finally get paid are over.

Tell that to the top young centres in the league who all signed for about 6 million.
RFA is still a discount, and a big one.

Really? Based on a lot of contracts we've seen signed for RFAs this past year, I'd suggest they most certainly are.

Take a look at this list. Almost every name in the top 20ish are all making max value based on their UFA years, not their RFA years.

Stamkos says hi.
Just because teams are signing key players and not allowing them to get to free agency, doesn't mean the value of UFA years has deteriorated.
What HAS changed, IMO, is a greater focus/concern on the cap and the challenges with respect to operating within it

No, The star RFAs are signing the middling long term deals in the 6ish range.
Hall, Mackinnon, Monahan, Scheifele, Duchene, Couture, Saad.....
Sure there are a few exceptions, but they're not getting the 8-10 Million type deals like Sid, Kane, Kopi, Ovie, Malkin, Perry, Getz, Toews, Giroux.....

Also, those young players are the exception.
More importantly though, just because they have signed larger deals than young players were signing earlier, does not mean that the trend to higher salaries as players age has been eradicated.
There is still every reason to believe that they will get more on their next contracts, just as Kane and Toews got more on theirs.

You are litterally arguing semantics now. What you are calling a middling long term deal, is a huge jump in cash from what was seen previously for any RFA.
You've kind of tried to re-frame the argument to suit your point. You are totally correct that the highest paid players at the moment are the big name UFAs...........not sure that was what the debate was though.
Lots of UFAs are now also having to take PTOs, small deals or are completely out of the league now, when previously they got paid well for past results. The league has shifted in the past few years hugely to pay for potential versus past results. No doubt the biggest name UFAs with tones of gas left get the biggest pay days, but the young RFAs predicted to the be the future are getting paid much better by clubs to lock them in based on future performance. Things have changed a lot in the RFA / UFA world recently.

No I didn't. Most of those guys just signed their deals in the last couple years. Kopi and Stamkos just signed this year to monster deals that ate up their UFA years.

The cap has nearly doubled when it was first introduced.
Ovechkin signed 9.5M when the cap was 56.7M...17% of the cap. Crosby and Malkin signed 8.7M for about 15% of the cap. Even Kane's 6.3M contract was about 11% of the cap for its first year. Vanek signed an offersheet that was worth over 14% of the cap.
Ekblad's 'massive' 7.5M RFA cap hit will take up about 10% of the cap when it goes into effect next year.
Monahan's contract is 8.5% of the cap, nearly the exact same percentage Penner got from the Oilers offersheet...

Well, there are two debates in one here: young stars who are negotiating on deals which combine RFA and UFA years and the argument that Treliving overpaid UFAs.
While Treliving may have overpaid for Brower, the fact is that the contract was what was going on in the market. Same for Engelland and Raymond. The UFAs who are now on PTOs are the other side of that market - some GMs aer deciding that they'd rather pay ELC dollars to ELC players.
With Gaudreau, while I think he's better than Tarasenko, he's not THAT much better. And he's had two great years, but he wants top 20 UFA money. That's pretty unprecedented.

funny how ken left out the other important number in the contract - the term.
I'd really be into some $8 x 8 deal if JG had one or two more productive seasons in his resume - but based on his body of work it seems that something around $6.5 for 3 yrs would be reasonable for both parties - although that would be a mess at the end if that deal dragged him into UFA territory.
it will be interesting to see if this board will feel that BT once again won this negotiation when the dust settles
