Should be on his team for preseason only. This is just a move for until other players finish their duties at the World Cup of Hockey. Can't see him making the NHL regular season, just like Higgins. Oh, and Galiardi too.

The next day, Setoguchi scoured four liquor stores in search of Jameson. That’s when he began polishing off an entire 26-ounce bottle each morning. Eventually, that escalated into two every day. He knows how stupid it all sounds now, but at the time, the goal was to “mess me up faster,” and whiskey accomplished that better than beer.
Holy ####!

Ya, that part jumped out at me too. That is a lot of liquor. Half a 26 and I am pretty messed up. I can't imagine 2 full bottles.
Maybe being completely sober will resurrect his career, it will be interesting to see how this progresses for him, if it does at all.

Regardless of what happens with his NHL career, it's always nice to read about people who are able to overcome a crippling addiction. Hope all goes well for him.

IIRC wasn't he supposed to have been clean and sober when he signed with the Flames, as it was known he had a problem?

Yes, it says that in the story.
He promised Treliving he would be clean and sober when he came to Calgary, but being so close to his home town led to him falling into his old ways with his old crew. Then, he got demoted to Adirondack and got injured down there, so he was in a small town in the middle of nowhere, with no friends or family around, so he started drinking more and more.

I'm a little disappointed the teams didn't take a bigger role in trying to help out a player who was clearly having issues.
Wpg in particular where he speculates they knew about his problem since he was drinking in their casino. Cgy, similarly if he's demoted on account of substance abuse, what kind of example is that for people up and coming?
Of course, once again McGrattan figures in looking after a teammate.
Love that guy.

Being demoted doesn't mean they didn't try to help.
They can offer him treatment and guidance while not also hindering their hockey team by having him on it.

And consequences. Addicts need consequences to their addiction. Perhaps being demoted was one such consequence

Is that actually true, or is it pseudo-religious dogma?

They need consequences for having a disease? Are you for real with that?

If the addiction and the consequences of the resulting behaviour it drove resulted in him being an insufficient contributor to the big team, why not?

I get it is considered a disease but there should absolutely be consequences for your actions. It is not like he got cancer from second hand smoke here, he willingly consumed copious amounts of alcohol.

The Flames job is to run a hockey team. I certainly hope they offered him some help for his problem as the article implies they knew about it. But it's not the Flames responsibility to ensure that as an addict, he receives the appropriate consequences for his addiction.

Yes. And it is a pretty standard part of any recovery process.

This makes zero sense. Care to explain yourself? How is saying an addict needs consequences to recover psuedo-religious dogma? Or did you just feel like using a big fancy word?
Look at every single NHLer who has ever been in a substance abuse program or tried to get clean. It always followed a pretty significant even in their life or career that made them either want to get clean or forced to get clean.

I think most recovery programs involve understanding and accepting consequences for the past and dealing with them.
