Most of them are irrelevant. Who cares if they call it a World Cup and have a mixed country team. Who cares if there's no history. Who cares if it's not a very specific version of best on best.
It's a hockey tournament for profit and entertainment put on by the NHL which showcases most of the very best hockey talent in the world. It's not more than that or less than that. TBH I feel just as stupid defending it as I would complaining about it.
|
Exactly.
The complaint isn't about this tournament itself. It's about the presumed attempt (and likely possibility) of this replacing the Olympics. A tournament based on national pride, not profit for the NHL.
It's the same reason people love the WJHC. It's just kids, playing for nothing but their nation. That's what the players want to do, absolutely 100% guaranteed. You see people dropping out with minor injuries here, and you see people trying to do everything possible to have a chance to play in an Olympic game.

At least in the Olympics it's the best countries vs the best countries. This isn't even that. It's not the best countries going up against each other and it's not even the best players playing each other.
Having said that, I can't wait to watch the World Cup.

Team Canada didn't have all its best players out for the Olympics either. You could argue almost every "best on best" tournament wasn't actually best on best. Guys like Hamhuis, Sharp, Marleau and Kunitz over the likes of Seabrook, Seguin, Giroux and Thornton? (You could argue because of positions, but Giroux and Seguin have both played wing many times)

I never argued the Olympics was best on best player wise, but definitely best on best country wise. The best countries in the world play each other in the Olympics.

I rank the World Cup right between the World Juniors and a Flames pre-season game.

Brilliant stuff. You don't care either way, but you want people who simply just don't care to further justify their position to you.
Productive.

Can anyone confirm how this tournament works on the financial side? I know this is a joint venture with the NHL and NHLPA with profits being split 50/50.
Are the players selected being paid their portion based on profits, is it an even split? Or does this go to general PA expenses? I have tried asking this question before elsewhere but never got a clean answer. Just wondering what happens with the players portion. Thanks!

I was having fun with the discussion, and I enjoyed hearing people explain their issues with it in more detail. Thanks Matty for actually engaging!
But I see you're busy being productive yourself with the whole "Jets fan trolling the Flames board" shtick. You're the real hero we deserve.

Not quite up there with the whole "need everyone to explain themselves to my satisfaction" schtick. But I try.
Oh, and Go Sharks. Ammirite?

That's all I'm hoping for. If the players play hard, then I'll love it. But with how they're dropping out with minor injuries im just not sure that's going to be the case.

Yeah man! Would've like them to have won the cup, oh well!
Seems to be I was having a fine conversation with Matty and a couple others, so, if you want to add to it then do so. If not, I'm sure the whole board wouldn't mind a couple less posts from you. As valuable and relevant as they always are.
Don't worry, we'll survive.
Anyways,

I think it'll be tough to get a lot of effort this year, but as it goes on I think it'll get better, and hopefully that carries over to the next WC.

Kind of what I'm expecting too. If it turns out they don't send players to the olympics, and somehow got the KHL on board, then the World Cup would mean a bit moire and I think we'd see a better touirnement.
I'd still rather keep the olympics though

Ideally like football/soccer, there´d be only one global tournament every 4 years to avoid over-saturation. The problem is the NHL doesn´t control the Olympics so they make up their own tournament to ensure they get the money and not the IOC. They´d love to turn the Olympics into what it was before where NHLers didn´t go. I think the mystique and tradition of the Olympics is their biggest obstacle to that and will be difficult to overcome.

Soccer has a major international tournament every 2 years - Euro and the World Cup. It seems to work.
Hockey could absolutely handle a World Cup and an Olympics every two years. They would feed off each other, and the World Cup has the ability to travel in ways the Olympics just can't.
Chicago can't hold the Winter Olympics. Neither can New York. Or Los Angeles. Or Philadelphia. But they could hold a World Cup of Hockey with six teams and sell it out.
We should be able to have both. There's no reason to not have both.

The reason we can't have both is the same reason the NHL is still pushing the Wideman arbitration appeal. The league is lead by a guy who absolutely refuses to do anything he perceives as losing, even when it's not losing.

This whole thing is basically a dick measuring contest between Bettman and Fasel
