I really hope the ratings for this thing bomb. I don't usually like to hope for failure but this I'll make and exception here.

Meanwhile, NHL.com has confused Mony with Jakub Nakladal:

If Monahan cared about thus tournament, I'm sure this injury wouldn't stop him. I'm guessing half the "injured" players would be at this tournament if it meant anything to them.

I kind of agree with you 100% It seems that Rogers Sportsnet, NHL and others are pushing this thing far too hard. On a lot of interview's I have seen and heard on TV/ radio even some of the players who are PLAYING don't seem to be too pumped up for it. Lots of "we will see, still early"

The thing that drives me nuts though is the comparisons to the 72 Summit Series and the "significance" of this tournament. This is a cash grab and nothing more. I don't want to hear "best on best" anymore.

The 72 Summit series was about politics, ways of life the "superiority" of both Soviet and Canadian hockey styles.

As for best on best? What a joke! I guess when players like Ovi and Malkin are in Montreal to play the Habs during the season, the Price/Webber combo isn't going to be "best on best"

Sorry about the rant but this made up hype is getting out of control.

Agreed, this whole tournament seems pointless. Just get on with the NHL season already.

I get it, this is all media hype and all that. Just like the World Juniors. But what's Rogers supposed to do? Seriously, do you expect them to tell everyone that this tournament doesn't really matter? Of course they're going to hype the crap out of it.

I don't know why so many fans posting on a hockey message board in the summer are complaining about this tournament.

Hockey starting three weeks early is awesome!

Yah, not sure why people are knocking this thing. We get hockey earlier this year, which is always a nice thing. Kind of bummed Monahan isn't there. At least we still get to cheer for Johnny. Unless he's traded of course. *ducks*

Having an outright disdain for hockey the NHL provides is just kind of par for the course.

Everything is a cash grab essentially, and meaningless the same. Some things may mean a little more, but in the scope of everything it's all pointless.

World Cup? Blatant cash grab.
Olympics? Blatant cash grab with "prestige"
Outdoor games? Blatant cash grab
All star game? Blatant cash grab
Basically every NHL game? Blatant cash grab.
Seasons, playoffs, they could all be shorter by they aren't... why?

We know why, but who cares?

Some people just don't like fun. The NHL is 100% about money and making money. People work their whole lives to get there, but at the end of the day they're all having fun playing a game or just doing it for the money.

Any hockey they want to put on is fine by me. I just have fun watching it.

The only thing I have against the World Cup is that I have a feeling that the NHL and NHLPA will offer it in replace of agreeing to send it's players to the Olympics

Yes, NHL Training Camps and preseason will start while the World Cup is still going on. Training Camps are starting a little later this year, but that's the only difference.

It's questionable as to how much of camp players are going to miss though. Half the teams in the World Cup will play their final games on September 21/22. Two more teams will be done by the 25th. Only the final two teams will play until the end (as late as October 1).

The Flames play their first preseason games on September 26th, so it's entirely possible that Gaudreau, Frolik, Jokipakka, and Backlund will all be done at the World Cup before that. Finland, Sweden, and North America are all in the same Group, and only two teams from each Group will advance to the Semifinals, so at least one Flame will be done by the 22nd. Unless there's a Sweden-Czechia final, there will be at most one Flame still playing in the World Cup beyond the 25th.

I don't begrudge the cash grab because, like you say, everything they do is a cash grab. It's a business and I'm willing to be cash-grabbed all the time and I'm fine with that, but...

This whole thing seems kind of pointless, or maybe frivolous, or something. It just doesn't seem like a serious tournament to anyone. Obviously I could be way off on that because I don't know what the participants are thinking, but that's just the vibe I get from it.

The Olympics are only a year and a half away and that's what (I think) most fans believe really counts.

It's sort of like the World Cup is an exhibition game, and the Olympics are the Stanley Cup Final.

If you compare the WC rosters to these rosters, how much better is this tourney.

Whoops, by WC I meant "World Cup", not "World Championships".

I think it's a good amount better. There really aren't any weak teams aside from maybe the Czechs. And the U23 team and team Europe makes the concentration of talent that much higher.
