Just stay out of the left lane, seriously. Especially if people are behind you and want you out of the way. Just get out of the way.

I would have had to come to a complete stop to merge into gridlock. Did you read my post?

This is clearly the only answer. Everyone just stop using the left lane. Ever. We will leave them there, you know, as a message to future generations, but we will never use the left lane again.

The first rule of using the left lane is: You do not talk about using the left lane

The thing that drives me nuts and it isn't really a rule but it's common sense.

When roads are nearing capacity the two lanes adopt consistent speeds of 10-20km apart. It is imperative in this scenario for the right lane driver to accelerate to the left lane speed before changing lanes to pass a slower moving vehicle. If they don't the entire highway for a km or 2 has to check their speed reducing the overall capacity of the lane.

If you don't do this you are bad driver.

Man I'm driving up the QE2 this weekend and I'm going to be all over that left lane like a fat kid on an oreo. Doing 112 the Whole. Damn. Way.
The left lane is my domain!

Also does the concept of the left lane apply to walking?

Since I got to Edmonton I've noticed drivers are actually a little bit better than Calgary in terms of keeping right except to pass. The southwest section of our ring road is vastly underbuilt for the amount of traffic it handles but it moves reasonably well because lane discipline is actually fairly decent. Our biggest problem, like Calgary, is simply poor merging and following too closely. Turn signal usage ranks fairly low on my list of irritations cause 99% of the time I'm giving way to people if they're signalling anyway.

I drive QE2 fairly regularly and yeah you have to undercut people at times because they don't get the message, but I just give it a bit of gas and do it as safely as possible. Just be aware of your surroundings in case they finally decide to come back.

Quite effective trolling by Jiri in this thread. You da real MVP.

As soon as I got past the Deerfoot exit I got out of their way and they raced past, even though they ended up going to Deerfoot Meadows - just like me - and I ended up right near them again thanks to traffic and lights and such!

Please don't be that kind of left lane person, everyone.

Yes. Unless he's passing at a snails pace, he's fine and Ram driver is an ass.

Yeah, except according to him he was going 10 km / h below the speed limit. Why?

I guess it was because he was worried about someone in the right lane being an idiot, but that seems overly defensive to me. At any point I guess it's technically possible that someone driving near you will attempt suicide by crashing their car into yours but you can't drive around assuming that at all times or you'll end up having a heart attack.

In times of high congestion, people often cut from the middle/slower moving lane into the fast lane when they see an opportunity. Because of the difference of speed, it's nearly impossible for them to match the speed of the fast lane right away, so they cause a slow down. This happens on Deerfoot all the time. It isn't rare or unique. In these scenarios the fast lane is almost always going 10-15% below the limit.

The driver was being completely logical and the perfect amount of cautious, obviously.

Thats when the shoulder becomes the faster option and you sometimes see an extra lane created.

If he was just getting up to speed of traffic that's fine. If he sees someone trying to exit and wants to be good guy Mazrim and slow down so they can get out of the traffic jam, I'm okay with that too because I'd be grateful for someone showing me that courtesy (others' views may vary on whether this is legitimate practice rather than simply driving predictably and letting the guy wait for an actual safe time to merge out). Those hypotheticals weren't my understanding of what actually happened though, because he said he just thinks 70 km / h on Glenmore is a fine speed to drive.

Hell, even if just he wants to drive below the limit because that's what he's comfortable with, the truck driver shouldn't be tailgating and flipping him off. He's still in the wrong and Mazrim is at best a minor inconvenience to be tolerated for a minute. But I'd be mildly frustrated if I were the guy behind him and had somewhere to be.

Madrid is correct here because he moved out of the way of traffic merging into the roadway. If a car is merging into a two lane road the car in the highway should move into the left lane to allow the car to merge in. Merging takes effort from everyone on the roadway.

In this exact situation, not every situation:
