The list of players who asked for trades or were tough in negotiations because they wanted to be "close to home" is pretty darn short. Even shorter I suspect is a list of players who think they will make big endorsement bucks by playing in the US. Even if Gaudreau went home to Philly his endorsement value would be small (smaller, I bet, than in Calgary) because of the sport he plays.

So is the list for comparables for players. Point is, we don't know what's going on, and I'm not sure we can rely on assumptions about history to help in predicting the outcome.

I just watched AC's Gaudreau videos again. It did not resolve my immediate desire to have him signed. Also, I think that top line will miss Hudler. Even with the off year he was a key player in a lot of those slick passing plays.

Gaudreau scored 19 points in 20 games following the Hudler trade, and Monahan scored 22 in 22 games. I suspect that this fear is exaggerated.

The Calgary Flames and Johnny Gaudreau’s camp have still not come to terms on a pact for the restricted free agent.

“It’s not imminent, from what I understand,” relayed Friedman. “Johnny Gaudreau put a bit of a soft deadline on this for the World Cup of Hockey; that once he reports for the Team North America lineup on Sunday, there will no discussions that involve him until after the World Cup is over. And I’m told it seems unlikely it’ll be done before then.

“One of the things I’ve tried to check and see is if there’s a short-term deal in the possibility here. It doesn’t sound like it. It sounds like both sides are looking at a long term. That's not to say Monahan would be easy to replace. But there are more players like Sean Monahan than there are like Gaudreau. So if push came to shove, you could consider moving Monahan for a Scheifele or Draisaitl etc. If you are going to lose Gaudreau you aren't very likely to find a young LW who can replace what he brings.

Um.. re: bolded. That is an optimistic position. There is plenty of wing talent that could plausibly replace him for the next decade (er... eight years) if push came to shove. Especially if there were an associated cap hit saving to spread out the top end talent:

..never mind other forwards who while natural centers still could make potent wingers (McDavid, Eichel, Matthews, Bennett, Kuznetsov, MacKinnon, Barkov, Nylander, Aho, Strome, Draisaitl, Nugent-Hopkins, Larkin).

Johnny is special. But he ain't the only special on the entire map. He plays a highly offensive role on a highly offensive team with generous minutes that afford him better offensive production than some two-way centres may get.

Does he excel in his role yes but to say he's irreplaceable is hyperbole. He's not Crosby here. He's not even TJ Brodie. He's not Jamie Benn either.
