Only to trade Russell at this year's deadline for a NHL roster player, a CHL prospect and a 2nd rounder!!!

Ya - I was thinking about expansion draft implications as well. If we signed Russell to a two year deal, I believe we'd have at a minimum:
- a qualified Kevin
- a qualified 'Spoon
- a signed Kris Russell
Perhaps the qualified but not signed players offer enough distraction to Vegas to pass them up and instead take Russell.
Either way - I'm totally fine with not graduating any of our non-Wotherspoon "D" prospects this year. NEXT YEAR I'll be hoping for one or two of Chilly, Rasmus or Hickey.

Good to hear, but we all know that when Dion had hip surgery he was never the same. So I'm more than happy to have an additional option.

So what does the defence look like with a Russell return?
Mark Giordano - T.J. Brodie
Jyrki Jokipakka - Dougie Hamilton
Kris Russell - Dennis Wideman
Deryk Engelland
? I'm assuming that the cap space they need to create would be fulfilled by Smid going on LTIR. Could this be a feasible lineup?

It's possible. But with a new coach anything is possible and with how terrible the team was defensively last year Gulutzan may look to shake it up completely.

Top 4 on that mock up is how I see it. The 5-7 spots can disappear IMO. I have no desire to see Russell return and Wideman needs to go too. Engelland is a good #7 but I feel like a couple of the kids can easily oust any of the bottom D men.

Which ones? I don't think any of our kids have proven they can muster up game better than any of that 5-7 with maybe the exception of how Wideman played for parts of last year. Strong argument to be made that the smarter overall move would be to accept the downgrade at 5-7 by playing the young folks and freeing up the cap space for elsewhere, but take cap hit out of it and there is no reason to believe that any if our youngsters in the system would be equal to or upgrades on Russell or Engelland. At least not with what they've shown to date.

I think at this point, the Flames shouldn't have to fork out much more than league minimum for Russell over a one or two year deal. Maybe, because the Flames value him as a person and a leader, it can be incentive based.
Scary to think that the Flames and Russell were rumoured to be around a million dollars apart during contract negotiations. If Russell's agent was seeking $5.5 million per year, that means the Flames potentially offered him $4-$4.5 million per year. If true, the Flames sure dodged a bullet considering the rest of the league isn't interested (maybe not interested in the salary demand or term).
Also if true, Kris must feel pretty silly turning down such a gross overpayment for his services from his hometown team.

I sure hope Russell ends up somewhere other than Calgary. Too big of a step backwards.

I only want him if he comes in closer to 3m (probably the realistic number for a UFA)

I realize that he can't go on LTIR until the season starts...but I also understand teams can be over the cap (by 10% I think?) right up until season starts.
So could they:
- Sign Russell on August 30th
- Go through all the regular motions of training camp through Sept / Oct
- Put Smid on LTIR opening day
- Satisfy the NHL's salary cap on opening day
We also have $3M in bonus cushion and will likely have $1M of true Cap Space after JG signs. Hell -> maybe Johnny doesn't sign until after the season starts and Smid is IR'd ! (Let's hope not!)
|
IMO The flames have probably a pretty good idea by now if Smid is going to be on LTIR or if there is a chance he can play. No way Russel would be taking a chance on waiting if Smid wants to and might be able to play this season. If flames think Smid will be on LTIR then they would probably have already signed Russel.
As some other have said, moving bad contracts is one of the hardest thing to do in the NHL. I also can't see Russel waiting along for the hopes that the flames can move a bad contract. I've said it before that i don't think Wideman with his NMC and large salary is tradeable, even eating money. Forget about Stajan being able to be moved. Maybe Bouma if they eat some money. I rather have Bouma at high cap hit on 4th line blocking shots than Russel on D.
I don't believe this rumour at all.

I'm no expert on this, but I know they have to include Smid in the cap number to start the season, then they are allowed to go over the cap up to his salary amount to replace him.
I don't think they can have both on the roster at camp without moving a body out, which I'm guessing they are having a tough time doing.
