I would much rather an 8 year deal than a bridge but I'm not going to panic if it's a bridge. I was more commenting on how many here seem so damned insecure about Gaudreau's desire to stay in Calgary. Edmonton fans have much more to worry about with McDavid and they shrug that off like it's nothing... "McDavid's not that kind of guy", "He's going to take a discount to win", and "He looked despondent at the lottery because that's his personality" BLAH BLAH BLAH...
This fan base could use a bit of that confidence it pains me to say.

These are some fair points. One thing that concerns me is Gaudreau's agent knowing there is potential for a lot more money south of the border. I personally think that Johnny is going to be a face of the entire league as the transition from the Crosby era to the McDavid era occurs. Considering that he is from the NEUS perhaps his agent feels the endorsements that would be available to Johnny playing in a Boston, NY, Philly market is the way he should go.
My biggest fear with this negotiation is the term which I can imagine the Gaudreau camp trying to get around the 5-6 year term where the Flames want 7-8 years. If Johnny signs a 6x6 deal I think that is a loss for Treliving personally.

6x6 would be a huge win IMO. 6 AAV until he almost 30

Endorsements for NHL players are typically not worth much relative to their actual contracts, and I am quite sure that the difference of Gaudreau's off-ice earning potential in a large US market v. Calgary would be practically negligible. Moreover, any transition period between the Corsby to the McDavid era is bound to be pretty short to non-existent.

If Johnnynis going to be one of the faces of the league in the next few years it is not out of the question to assume he would be very marketable in a big US city especially if USA hockey wants him to be their main attraction which could easily happen. I see Gaudreau kind of like the Steph Curry of the NHL as he is undersized but does things that make people's jaws drop. I know the NBA is happy to have Curry in a big market and I could see Johnny's agent pushing for the same thing. That is me with my tinfoil cap on though.
Johnny vs McDavid for the next decade playing for rival teams is also a very attractive story line to watch and can be a great story to sell in Canada and even the US

Of course, but what do you think all of that is tangibly worth?

That is all fine and good, but the fact remains that NHL player endorsements are just not that lucrative compared to their NHL contracts. I don't see this suddenly about to change with Gaudreau's increasing popularity.

I would think Gaudreau has more endorsement opportunities as both a face of American hockey (which he is/will be) and a star in a Canadian market.
All companies in the US have to do is put him USA colors instead of Flames and Bob's your uncle.
Plus, he's going to make most of his money off of his Johnny Hockey branding IMO. I see full gear set ups, sticks, skates, the whole nine yards. It's a great brand name.

I remember when Stamkos signed in TO because of all the extra endorsement cash he got.

I remember when Iginla wanted out in the mid 2000s, cause he'd have been the most marketable player in the game if he played south of the border.
Was that the time we thought he was being traded for Simon Gagne?

The talk about endorsements made me wonder...
Is Gaudreau more valuable to the NHL and sponsorship if he played in a large US market such as.. say... Philly?
Not sure what it has to do with any of this... But could you imagine Flyers/Pens games and how the NHL would pump every cent they could out of that machine?

There's probably a ton of eyeballs and money in it for the league and Gaudreau long-term matching up against McDavid 6 times a year.

I don't think so, these are two small markets, if Johnny plays for a big American market, than he going to get more viewers, more sponsors.

What big american market? This is hockey we're talking about. Honestly, Calgary is probably a bigger hockey market than all of the American markets outside of Manhattan and Chicago. Maybe throw LA in there. New Jersey is a struggling market that has trouble selling out. Boston is a decent market but probably comparable to Calgary's, and with a team looking to go nowhere any time soon. Seems to me people are making this into a way bigger thing than it is. Is Camalleri raking in endorsement dollars? Hell, is Ovechkin? What national ad companies is he on? What about Parise, the native son?
This whole thing is about contract dollars. Period. Johnny has a cutthroat agent that wants to maximize earnings. All this other talk is just Canadian inferiority complex.

As much as we love the player that he is, he's never going to be the best player in the NHL. He's never going to be the biggest star.
American-born or not, a really good NHL player isn't going to be national face for Gatorade or McDonald's or Nike or whatever in the States.
His 'marketability' is as good here as it is anywhere. Probably better than it is in almost every American market, if that's actually a priority, which I doubt it is.
Like someone said above, the big money is in actually playing hockey, not shilling stuff at a local or state-wide level.

I'm surprised no one has brought up the getting paid in US dollars living in Canada angle.

Fair enough, like I said, I don't know enough about that stuff. Plus, it seems like it's not really his own money to be spent, hence not his decision on coverage.

It's odd. I've never seen this much consternation by a fan base about a player who wants to play at 'home' right after his ELC.
Like where is your evidence? The countless soundbites where Johnny says he wants to stay in Calgary?
How come no one was worried Gio wanted to bolt to the Leafs? Or Mony for that matter?

Well he has stated that he wouldn't mind playing closer to home at some point in his career (he was being interviewed by someone out east though can't remember which thread that was posted in).
Also you hear about how close he is to his family and that also could be a reason he wants to go back east. The Gio comparison is off base as we are dealing with an American not a Canadian big Calgary was a California based team I don't think we are worried at all.
I also don't think many in here are talking about him playing back home now but after his second contract. I am one of those paranoid fans that thinks this is the last deal Johnny signs in Calgary which is why I hope it is 8 years.
Obviously things can change. The team wins multiple cups, Johnny meets a good old Canadian girl that has her heart in Calgary and doesn't want to leave? A lot can happen but here we are the last day in August and our Superstar winger still hasn't signed. Pretty easy to see why people are worried or paranoid
