I think the Flames get the deal done by the end of the week to avoid the questions during the tournament

I think that's the point. If there is any debate that he's an elite player that stems from the lack of sample size, I could see a tournament like this being used as evidence in either direction, but more so if he comes in and has a MVP type performance.

That depends on the level of compete that happens at the tournament, if it even really has a chance to be looked at in negotiations...imo

It has a massive impact on the pressure and PR side of things, maybe not the actual negotiations though. If Johnny leads the tourney in scoring and the Flames are locked up in a hold out situation come October, BT will feel a little extra pressure i'm sure.

I'd be interested in the amount of insurance Johnny has taken out for the tournament. I suppose it might give insight into his expectations.

Not well thought out because I don't know much about private insurance for athletes, but wouldn't he take out the amount he expected to earn over a decent career, to cover a career ending injury? Obviously on the high side?

I think someone said in another thread it would have cost Crosby 400k a month of his own money to insure his contract.

Of course, Crosby has a contract so the risk is more easily quantifiable. Johnny's would be an estimate of what he might sign for. But I guess the prudent thing would be to estimate high.
There are some sources saying the insurance is at NHL/NHLPA expense for RFAs. So maybe it doesn't have any bearing at all.

I think the point here is that the cost for his own insurance to cover the value of his next contract will be so prohibitively high that Gaudreau will almost certainly not spend that much. Hence, his insurance policy does not provide any insight into his contract ask.

I still think Gaudreau signs a shorter term contract (3 or 4 years, whatever doesn't take him to UFA) as he is concerned about not making max dollars during his prime. I think if he signs 8 years now he won't get that.
I agree with Boomer this morning when he said that if the Flames slid a contract for 8 years 60 million across the table to Gaudreau's camp he wouldn't sign it.

Why is that? How would you structure each year's salary to total it up to 60/8?
Is his camp gunning for 10+ per year for the UFA seasons? They're not realistically getting that, not with Treliving running negotiations.

$60M is the Tarasenko contract: 8 x $7.5M
And I disagree with Boomer - I think they would, and I think they'd be crazy not to.

Ugh, that would be brutal. Would give the Flames a very small window to win before likely having to dole out roughly $10 million per year to Johnny. Heck, maybe even more if he continues trending the way his first two seasons indicate. If that happened it would really make a mess of the teams cap structure.
