A place to wage the ongoing war between the maniacs and ###holes!
What is your take on the left lane/right lane conundrum and passing controversy on highways? Think that other person's opinion makes them either a maniac or an ###hole? Let them know here, and only here...as in not in the Funny and Cool Picture and Video Thread.
To start, I stay predominantly in the right lane when on the highway and only use the left to pass. If I'm already in the left and passing a convey of slower people, I will stay there and tend not to speed up for the maniacs behind me...but I get over into the right at first opportunity.
The only time I speed up is if the ###hole in the right lane can't decide on a speed and I'm stuck trying to pass them for an extended period and I'm building my own convey. Chances are, the ###hole will soon choose a new speed and pass me somewhere along the road. ###hole.
With that said I'm perplexed that this thread will continue beyond that common sense statement, but it seems we have a very passionate left/right divide not seen in another other similar public sphere.
Let the battle commence!

It's so cute that this minutiae is even considered a problem. I however have to battle every day of my life on the roads just to stay alive. Florida is a terrifying place to drive.
A few weeks ago I was driving to the mountains and got to the uphill at Scott Lake Hill. One semi was in the middle lane, maybe managing 100 km/h. A second semi decided to pass him, perhaps at 105km/h. This meant I had to deek to the far right lane, and pass both of these giant A-holes. About 10 other cars behind me did the same thing. These so called "professional" drivers need to have their licenses revoked.
I really wish we had laws here like Europe where they are required to stay in the right most lane, and can only pass if they will not impede other traffic. I'm sure they are also required to have some amount of driver training, unlike the monkeys they let drive here.

and in bc....

B.C.’s new law to penalize drivers who clog up traffic in a left-hand lane of a multi-lane highway came into effect Friday. “Slow drivers camping out in that left-hand lane not only cause frustration for other drivers, but they cause accidents,” said Transportation Minister Todd Stone.
.....
• The penalties are among the stiffest in Canada. The fine for hogging the left lane is $167, and three driver penalty points. ICBC charges you a penalty point premium on your insurance if you get more than three penalty points in one year.

Okay, driving on a 110 km limit highway. I'm in the right lane doing 120. Three cars clustered ahead of me in the right lane are all doing around 110. I signal and move into the left lane. As I'm passing, a guy doing 130+ comes right up on my ass.
Can a left-laner explain why it's such a hardship to wait the 30 seconds or so it will take me to pass all three vehicles in the right lane and then pull into the right lane myself?

If you're passing, you can pass at your own pace so long as you move over once you're finished passing. Keep in mind though that if it takes you a minute to a pass car, you look like an idiot and are most likely a struggler since someone who displays confidence on the road doesn't have an issue accelerating to pass somebody at a normal pace (i.e. a few seconds) and then simply moving over and resuming whatever speed they'd like and letting the rest of traffic do it's thing.
Also, if you cut people off to pass at a slower rate than they were going to, you're a total left lane struggler in your own right. It means you have low awareness on the road and again, you should be beaten.

Why on earth does it take you 30 seconds to a pass a car?! A car is like 3 meters long.... Why are you even passing him if it's going to take 30 seconds for you to do it?
My rule is no matter how fast I'm going in the left lane if someone is coming up at a faster rate I move over if at all possible. If everyone followed this simple rule traffic would flow so much better.

Because people are a-holes.

Reading comprehension. I'm passing three cars that are clustered together. One or more is camper or a truck. This is a common scenario on the highway.

That's no big deal. As long as you're passing, and once you're done, you move over, you're doing it right. Why are you asking a question in such a way that you're expecting to get into a scrap? If I were to infer, I would say that you're probably lying about going 120, because a guy going 130 isn't going to land right on your ass out of nowhere unless you either are going slower than 120 to pass these three hypothetical cars, or else you pulled out in front of the guy going 130, even though you could tell he was going faster, in which case, why couldn't you have waited the 30 seconds, as the guy going 130 wanted to pass FOUR cars?

Here's a good video about the left lane and right lane:
While that video is correct, it's bizarre to me that they place all fault on the drivers who are driving slowly in the right lane, and none on drivers who are weaving in and out of traffic, as though weaving in and out is a natural and inevitable response to a slow driver in the left lane. If someone is driving slowly in the right lane, yeah, they suck. But weaving in and out of traffic to get around them is not an acceptable response to this.
The notions that 'my speed is fast enough' or 'the slowest driver should dictate the pace' is so incredibly short sighted, oblivious of traffic flow, and selfish (in the first instance), that I am amazed every time an adult manages to utter them.
If people obey the stay-to-the-right rule, and use the left lane to pass, traffic moves much, much smoother. This is a simple fact, proven all over the planet.
Conversely, drivers clogging the left lane will result in passing to the right, which causes unpredictable and variant behavior and more lane changes in both directions. Obviously, that is far more dangerous.
Another factor is the sheer number of cars on the road. If slower drivers dictate the pace, then average speed declines. If average speed declines, then the average driving time increases (by definition). If the average driving time increases, then the number of cars on the road at a given time increases (by definition). If the number of cars on the road at a given time increases, then it is a safe bet that the number of accidents will increase.

Because nothing like that has ever happened in Calgary. Strictly a Florida problem.
Did I say that?
At any rate, if you click the link you'll see the metrics that make Florida the worst state for driving. The left lane/right lane debate doesn't really apply when you have 6 lanes and guys are crossing multiple lanes in one go while moving at 100 mph, while a busted pickup truck full of illegals without insurance is going 60 mph blocking up a lane because they're afraid of getting pulled over.
It's a nightmare.

One of the things that isn't discussed enough is that, when using the left lane to pass, one must also consider that you don't move into a lane unless it is open.
If a person is going to take 30 seconds to pass, and a car is gaining rapidly on them but they decide to jump out and start their pass anyway, disregarding the traffic coming up behind them, then yes, they will (and should expect) to have that car ride their ass, because they didn't consider the car approaching them from behind when they pulled out.
It amazes me how often a person will jump in front of a fast approaching vehicle, going 1 mile an hour faster than the vehicle they want to pass, and hold the vehicle behind them up for 30 seconds - and feel uncomfortable about it the whole time - when all they had to do was wait 2 seconds to let the other pass and then carry on comfortably with their own passing maneuver in peace.
