Look I'm sympathetic to you on a personal side, if your union wants to strike, then you're on the side of the battle that's going to feel the pinch.

I am starting to regret getting my Flames ST mailed. Apparently I am way to optimistic. Is express post effected by this?

I am absolutely certain the Flames have alternate plans in place in the event of a strike. But, if you're really concerned, call them tomorrow. Chances are you will be able to change your option to pick-up.
Incidentally, it's fun reading back on this thread when it was management threatening the stoppage. I wonder how certain perspectives will change now that its the union threatening it?

It seems this is what CPC wanted all along. They didn't want to negotiate and wanted us to strike, so it looks bad on us and not them.

I'd be very interested to know where both parties started at, and where they are now. Personally, I rather doubt the union was "negotiating" much either.
That said, I said before that labour action is a right both parties have, and it is part of the process. I stand by that view.

Oh I agree that the union probably isn't negotiating much either. I get news and notes from the union saying things that make CPC look bad, but of course that's what they are going to tell us. One of my really good friends is actually in management at CP, he is the labour relations manager so he has a bit of inside info and he tells me otherwise.

That was one of the things I hated when I worked in a union enviroment. You could never get unbiased info when it came to possible strikes. The union would say something and the company would say something else, with the truth being somewhere in between.

Press conference has been put on hold. They might be hashing out details on an acceptable contract.

It really does suck being on edge this whole summer. Not knowing whether or not I'll be working. I mean settle this soon so I can buy tickets to the Jays game in Seatle and I can pay my league fees for hockey.

On Twitter some are tweeting that CUPW has issued 72 hour strike notice.

Good riddance, its not like the old days where the population couldn't survive without Canada Post so everytime the Union got a cold CP was there with a hanky and a there there pumpkin, here's a raise.
If they want to go on stike, then go on strike, but I doubt that its going to be a short one, and I don't think that politically the government is going to step in with a back to work legislation for something that has really become non-essential.

Excellent. I think that this strike will be very interesting to watch.
I am sympathetic to folks like hockey and others who are union members and are coming out stating that they don't want to strike and that they don't like how the union is representing them. I think that previous strike and work action efforts were actually for the benefit of the employees but in this case it looks like there is a pretty significant divide between the union and their membership. I'm hoping that the membership can kick their worthless union to the curb.

I really wonder if the union brass understands or appreciates the financial hardship a strike will create for it's members. Strike pay is not going to cover wages lost and should this go on for an extended period of time, there will be some real financial struggles for some members.

I'd be really surprised if union brass actually cares, Dion. These things are usually presented as a sacrifice today for a benefit tomorrow. The workers who suffer today are simply martyrs for the cause.

You consider the loss of business to not be considered a "pinch" for the company?

If your Union is not representing it's members' requests, why are you not doing anything about it? The LRB is where you should be voicing your concern, not a message board. Sorry if this is true, and you are not trying to do anything about it you are simply playing the victim and enabling them in what you accuse them of.

I really don't under stand anti-union sentiment. These are regular people just trying to live their lives, it's like a lot people have no empathy at all. "Oh, but I feel sorry for you... but #### the union!" You know the union is made up of regular people right? And that the union membership is different than the leadership? The members are thousands of fractured voices... they aren't in control of this at all. Yet some people's attitude seems to be "screw these greedy bastards, get back to work, you're obsolete and over-paid. Go die in a ditch."
"Not my tax dollars!!1"
SO annoying. Like you're so personally invested in this. Such seething personal opinions about unions out there. Good grief, get a life.

Union should be doing what its members want, or at least what the majority wants. If they gave strike notice then there must have been a strike vote or a rejection of the current proposal, no? with a majority wishing to strike at a time when everyone is suffering in a bad economy, good idea, you'll get tons of sympathy.

I have to agree with you on that. Spent over 30 years working in a union shop and the attitude from the brass was always that they knew better and that we should trust them.
Can't afford to go on a strike? Suck it up and find another job to cover your lost wages if strike pay isn't enough. Arrogant and condescending.
Union members have to step up and be more vocal with thier thoughts and stop being mindless sheep for the greater cause. Use that brain that god gave you and look at the situation from both sides and don't be swayed by the biased info the brass gives you.
