I don't see a fit as long as Wideman is here, who I absolutely see as another Treliving deadline deal. He'll go somewherefor a 2nd or 3rd, and nobody will pickl him up on more than a tryout next summer.

I think teams know that of all the players on the Flames the last two years, Kris Russell probably benefited most from Hartleys out dated system.

How is Hartley's system out-dated? He won coach of the year two seasons ago by taking a young, rebuilding team to the Western Semi finals

Which every team besides the Oilers was able to neutralize a year later.

I thought Hartley's system was a great plan for an up-tempo, entertaining game that played to the strengths on the backend. It worked for a year (some may argue despite itself but I won't ) That was the most fun season of Flames hockey in years.
The problem is he didn't adapt as other teams adjusted, not to mention it had inherent flaws that were exposed when there was less team buy in.

Good systems don't constantly rely on coming from behind....

Oh I dont know, I'd have to agree that Hartley's system really couldnt work for long.
You cannot play that style perpetually. It was very successful, but its very intense and thats why we saw the huge dropoff in the second year.
He won a Jack Adams for getting the absolute most out of his players, but once they'd given all there was to give there was quite the steep dropoff.
You cant play balls to the wall constantly.

I too thought it was one of the most entertaining hockey the Flames have played since I've watched them, and perhaps the most entertaining since I've followed hockey. The come-backs kept me tuned in until the last minute, whereas before I would watch something else if the Flames were down a few goals in the 3rd. The tic-tac-toes, breakaways, and desperation saves were exciting.
People complain about low scoring but when we see a system that keeps us on the edge of our seats, they complain it's too risky? You can't have your cake and eat it too.
I can see the argument from bean counters that it's "not sustainable", as well as those who point out it's strategic flaws. But every system has it's flaws, because if there were a perfect system than everybody would be playing the same. And corsi is still a very primitive analytic. I couldn't care what the analytics say as long as I'm enjoying what I watch.

give me a Flames team that smothers its way to a cup with a whole bunch of 1-0 / 2-0 snoozers, I'll trade million years of run and gun Hartley seasons for it.

I'll watch playoff games, but I can't bother to expend 82 evenings of my life to Daryl Sutter hockey.

If the playoffs were reffed the same way as the regular season, Hartley's system could win in the playoffs. There's a reason that we had the most PP's in the league, and went on the PK the least, and it's not just luck.
However, they're not (much to my chagrin), so we need a new system.

One great example of the system working and then not working was the PP zone entry drop pass. First year, looked like genius. Next year you could see it coming a mile away! Reminded me of junior high basketball where our coach had one move.. he was adamant it was all about execution, but when the opposing team knew exactly what you were doing.. not a chance

The Gulutzan SDM conference thing incidentally has a really good video analysis of why Hartley's system is outdated at least WRT zone entry denial. Kind of ironic he'd be our coach after that. He basically made his pitch in September 2015 to coach our team with that little segment about Calgary's system.

I think Hartley's system was fine offensively - Flames did well there. I just think defensively his system was too passive relying too much on shot blocking, instead of challenging the players more on zone-entries and engaging/pressuring the opposing team in the defensive zone.

Ugh. Pinder on 960 this morning says he is hearing that Russell is waiting to sign with the Flames who can't until they move some money around. Kind of seems possible with Russell not signing anywhere as he could just be waiting for the Flames. Man I would be very, very, very disappointed if the Flames signed him for any sort of long term deal over $3 million/season.

if it's 1 or 2 years, meh, i think i'd be ok.
I think wideman is done as a Dman, and would prefer a mobile russel taking his minutes. He's a good bottom pairing guy who can step in to 2nd pairing minutes if required when injuries happen.
